16" rims ( 6.5 inch vs 6 inch width)
« on: November 08, 2005, 10:13:52 am »
After shopping around for some winter steel rims, Mazda have the original with 6.5 inch width and an aftermarket with 6 inch width.  The tire size is 205-55-16.  I am wondering if it will make a difference if the tires are mounted on a 6.5 inch or a 6 inch?

Thanks

The width of the tire will generally be "narrower" if the same tire is mounted on a narrower rim.
It affects the contact patch by a bit...not likely ever felt during normal driving conditions and given the relatively narrow 205 width.

Same tire on wheel A (wider) and wheel B (narrower) will produce a slightly different profile.
Wheel A combo will have a squarer profile while Wheel B combo a rounder profile.

Some tuners in Japan makes use of this to further "fine-tune" the handling characteristics of their cars.
More rounded profile in the rear for a bit more oversteer in drifting for example.

.5" isnt going to make any difference. Mount, balance and roll!
