Advice needed: tire or wheel?
« on: November 04, 2005, 09:38:55 pm »
A question regarding my 1998 Honda Civic: is it a problem with the tire or wheel? If it's a wheel problem, how much will it cost to have it fixed? If it's so expensive, I'd rather sell it at cheap and don't bother with it any longer.

The 98 Civic has a tendency of pulling up to the right. The mechanic used his devices and determined there was no problem with the alignment. Then he rotated the front wheels and found it now started to pull up to the left. Then he said it's the tire problem and he then rotated two front wheels with two rear wheels. Now it pulls to the right again, in a much less degree, but visible enough to feel the uncomfortbleness.

Can anyone suggest me what to do?

Thank you.

I would guess it is the tire.

One question though...hopefully your mechanic had checked this first but what are the pressure readings on your tires?

It sounds like a tire problem. Simple solution is air pressure as mentioned by msian. It could also be a radial tire pull, which is very common. What you can try to do if the tires are not directional; dismount the 2 front tires and remount on the opposite side. This should cancel out any pulling problem or is at least worth a try. Probably cost about $30. If the tires have irregular wear from a previous alignment problem that is now corrected they will probably still pull as the tread is worn unevenly. In this case you will need to replace them. If the tires are near the end...probably more cost effective to just replace them.

Yes. The tire pressue reads were checked and they were even. Thank you very much. I'll probably replace all the tires.

Also check to see if the tires are the same thread/make/model, mixing up tires might give you this type of issue.
