2000 GMC Sierra Problem
« on: November 04, 2005, 07:13:07 am »
I've got a 2000 GMC sierra long box regular cab, it has 60,000 kM on it and it shakes and shimmies pretty noticibly and I don't think it has anything to do with the tires or wheel alignment. I am also now getting the "service 4WD" light coming on occasionally. I was wondering if anybody else has experienced this? I never abused it and hardly used the 4WD but the warranty is now up and I don't want to take it in before I talk to other people about it. I maybe put 2000kM/year on it.

Anybody help??

Is it stuck in 4WD?  Why don't you think the tires are at fault?  For less than $60 you should be able to have all 4 tires balanced.  Maybe it's a u-joint seizing up?

Yes a little more info.  Put it into 2 wheel drive and confirm that it is fact only spinning the rear wheels.  Try it out on your neighbours lawn. ;)  Then if it still shakes or more correctly vibrates from within then as Mr. T pointed out it could be a bad U joint.  They don't build U joints like they use to.

A bad U joint will start to vibrate the truck at about 30 mph and get worse as you speed up.  Typically wheel balancing issues don't show up till 50 mph.
