The one thing that was universal among VW service advisors is that they admitted that the made in Mexico VW's all had serious problems as opposed to the made in Germany ones.

So that explains it. In Europe the Golf/Jetta has a pretty good reputation for reliability, and I was wondering why it seems so troublesome in North America.

Where is the new Jetta made?

I don't want to come across as a VW basher but I've always believed (from observing cars on the road and 2 friends who are VW owners themselves) that generally, VWs seem to get more than their fair share of electrical problems.  Any truth to that?

That applies to all the german brands, not just VW. From what I understand, VW went through a rough patch in 2000-2003 with the Golf and Jettas... but that most issues were resolved for 2003 and 2004. I certainly haven't had any problems with my 2004 so far, and it's already up to 60,000km on it.

I actually have to agree with that as even the Mercede line of vehicles has had their fair share of electrical problems as well. Maybe they have the one same wiring harness Company that they all use in Germany.  ??? :)

i have a 2002 jetta tdi. i've had problems starting the car ever since i bought it. i've had the manifold intake replaced, the relay to the glow plugs replaced. had the glow plugs checked and the harness for it. my problem with my car now is that i can let it sit over night and it starts normally. but after i've driven the car a while and then park it. ( i use this car for work). if it sits longer than one hour, especially during the winter, i have a lot of trouble starting it. this morning my car wouldn't start right away and the longer i tried to start it the worse it got. pretty soon it was only the battery and the engine stopped trying to fire. anyone have or have had this problem?  how much will it cost to fix it in general? it seems that tdi's have lots of temp sensor problems.

Our 1993 Jetta GL sure was bad when it came to electrical problems. We were continually replacing headlights, taillights, dashlights (go figure, the ones in my Chevelle have never gone), ignition wires etc. We finally gave up on the car after getting stranded for the third time in 6 months. We are very good about maintenance and were always trying to have things replaced before they would break. So, we went with a Civic for our next car. We didn't even test drive A VW. Unless there is a huge turnaround and VW can catch up to Honda/Toyota for reliability then we will probably never own one again. Too bad as well as we loved our Jetta and had lots of fun driving it. It was the times that it wouldn't drive that were the problem. >:(

Probably some models may well be as GM has come a long ways in the last few years.  :)

Fair to say because VW has had some nasty reliability issues; lousy components.  However they drive way better than a GM of similar size.

It depends what you mean by better. If you mean only reliability, then maybe, I don't know. But if you mean the cars themselves, how they drive, their look, their interiors, etc., GM isn't even close. IMO, of course.

VW offers a unique teutonic driving experience. Very fun cars to drive and this experience should be the benchmark that GM sets for Pontiac. IN MY OPINION :D GM builds a more reliable car than VW right now. I know that I am opening myself up to attack from the VW lovers on this board; but in my own personal experience and from other sales people in my field with VWs they just don't hold up reliability wise much past 100000km.  Beautiful vehicles both inside and out and an amazing driving experience. Just not a vehicle I would want to own long term. If they could get their reliability up towards Honda/Toyota standards then I would rather have a VW for its unique dynamics. As it is I would spend the money on an Acura or Lexus before a Passat for what VW wants for it.
