I've also seen the Corolla Wagon running around town (Ottawa).  Looks nothing like the Matrix ... I wouldn't say it looks better. 

what year was it? i didn't know they make current corolla wagons...

I'd guess it was a '05 or an '06, They even have a Yaris Veros for Ross!!! Can fit more loot in the trunk!!!

Personally, I like it.  The styling is edgy and way out there.

 

Fully agree.  I really love the exhaust treatment.

The rear door handles are probably the most unusual touch...

But not original - Alfa did this with the 147 and 156, Nissan did this with the original 4 door Pathfinder in the early 1990s, and GM used a similar design idea on the Chev Beretta and coupé versions of the Pontiac Gran Prix, Chev Lumina, and Buick Regal among others...  A great look though!
