I don't think their employees using the bathroom has anything to do with struggling sales. Try again Ford.

The 48-minute bathroom break limit is spelled out in the United Auto Workers contract that covers local plant rules.

WITF?

The fact that such a thing is spelled out in a contract and the fact that it has been specified to such an exact time limit says everything about what is wrong with this company/union BS.

Contracted 48 minute bathroom breaks?  Holy crap!  PROtracted is more like it.  Time to start sneaking a little ruffage onto the cafeteria menu.  ::)

Didn't they try the same thing at Gainers in Alta? What happens when a car reaches a point on the line where someone is "missing in action" due to a bathroom break? Do they have replacements on hand?

I think you folks are jumping to conclusions here that are not real as there's" NO Way" this could happen 4-5 times a day with every employee. There's something missing here in this Story. No company would ever stand for that as it dosen't even make sence. Possibly the total of times a day a person has to go there might total that amount but not every trip.  :)

It's NOT every time - it's the rest room daily limit, which would mean per shift I assume. So 48 mins in an 8 hour (or whatever a shift is) shift. Still, 48 mins out of 480 min shift is 10% of the total. Sounds pretty generous to me. The limit is 48 mins, sounds like the workers are abusing the 48 min limit and now have to be watched to see that 48 mins is adhered to. Typical labor-mgmt "sh!t" and I don't blame Ford for enforcing it.

The frontline staff where I work are required to be on the job 410 minutes out of the 480 for which they are paid every day.  The 70 minutes off are made up of a 30 minute paid lunch, two 15 minute coffee breaks and two 5 minute "wash ups" (one before lunch and and one at end-of-day).  Pee breaks are discretionary.

Apparently there are allegations that this story at Ford was "leaked" to the press by someone in the truck plant in question. I kid you not..... ;) :P

I originally briefly thought the title to this topic was "The solution to save Food!" and I clicked on it thinking it was something worth saving.  :P

From autoblog:

Chrysler does not intend to monitor employee bathroom habits
Posted Oct 31, 2005, 8:00 AM ET by Eric Bryant

As Ford suffers the sort of fallout one would expect from a nation full of potty-humor enthusiasts, Chrysler’s VP of Communications Jason Vines has stated that his company does not intend to employ the Gilbreths’ contribution to assembly-line efficiency while waiting for employees to answer nature’s call. As he puts it, “We’re not gonna use a stopwatch, turning a natural function into an Olympic sport. That… would just be… well… too anal.” He does acknowledge that US car companies are relatively lenient in allowing employees to pursue ”a more leisurely, quality rest room respite” which is one way to explain a 48-minute break in the reading room.
