If the wife doesn't like Subarus, I really don't think it's a good idea to buy one, or even to try to make her change her mind... it'll always come back at you everytime a small problem happens...

:nono: I think Ovr has an open mind and the intelligence to determine that a test drive will verify my request. When the test drive is complete and they come to the conclusion that the LGT is not the car I will respect that.

And why can't you respect the fact that his wife doesn't like Subaru? And who are you to REQUEST him to go out and test out a car that YOU like? Are you getting paid by Subaru to forward customers into their showrooms? Maybe you should... sometimes you really sound like a salesman for them...

...but when something fits the requirements so well, I'd say what's wrong with even a 'look'. Things change. Heck, have some fun with it.

Lordy knows I'm not in the market at the moment so someone might as well be test driving.

No, I am simply trying to explain to your level that a test drive will be necessary to fully appreciate the abilities of the new Subaru Legacy platform. Ovr will be diligent in his process and perform his due diligence I am sure.

Judging a car based on previous experience on older models can result in a missed opportunity. I think that Ovr will perform a condemnation test drive as I know I would. Even when I shop for cars I test the ones I “think” will be eliminated for validation. You never know that something will surprise you i.e. JB’s ride in a CTS

It doesn't fit the requirements as the requirements stated clearly "NO SUBARU".

OK..I will be the boring voice of reason...Keep the Solara..it's a perfect grocery getter and meets all of your criteria..Maybe get it detailed and repainted?

Speaking of Solara. I'm looking forward to the new G6 coupe with 6sp manual coming out next year in Canada..

Not a bad idea at all.  Actually, think of the modifications you could do with even a third of the money.  Firm up the suspension, upgrade the output with a turbo or supercharger.  Check out the TRD catalog to see if there's any fun to be had.

Looking new, I think the new Civic Si will be fun little runabout that won't break the bank.  Didn't somebody mention an upcoming RWD Tiburon?  That would have me looking.

If you want a four door, I think the MPS6 makes a good case.  Miata would be most fun, but not practical unless you are into freeze dried, vacuum packed groceries.

No fights over this, guys, supposed to be fun. If it isn't - don't post. It's easy to stay out.

Solara Convertible - no, thanks, we'll just keep the old Solara in that case. And keeping the '99 is not out of the question as wife could easily change her mind OR I might decide to pay off our very small mortgage instead of spending $ on more cars (blasphemy, I know). The mortgage will be gone by Nov 07 anyway.

I "may" look used yet and that opens another can of worms, so for the moment, only new.

Subaru - yes, they are good cars (good, not great IMO) BUT: have had 2 - 1 was a boring wagon, other was fun but annoying problems; don't really want a wagon; wife dislikes Subarus. There is the entire thread on here about what's wrong with Subaru. I hate the local dealer here. I will keep an open mind about Subaru but have to say it's got to overcome some negatives to make my short list. Who knows at this stage - this could take 4 or 5 months.

ovr, what about the TSX? You said in your original post that it might be too expensive, but it fits right into all your criterias, including price.

Of your list I would lean to the Miata and Mini (no big surprise).  You will own the Highlander, and both of these can definitely carry weekend luggage or groceries for two.

Miata - I haven't driven the new one, but love the look.  The interior has plus and minuses - seats look uncomfortable, but were pretty good (I'm 5'10" and an ever-expanding 185 lbs), guages are good, shifter felt good in hand, wasn't a big fan of the radio or HVAC controls.  The new top is fabulous, but you loose the old parcel shelf behind the seats that was very useful.  It's new and first year Miatas usually have an issue, but it's usually not a killer issue and old turns up 4 years down the line (not sure if that's good or bad).  Overall, Miatas are quite reliable and easy to work on.  Big plus, you have arguabely the best Mazda dealer in Canada in your hometown (and they are super great to Miata owners).  You also have a good local Miata club with lots of knowledge.

Mini - more practical than the Miata - I think of it as a two-seater with a big trunk (or emergency seats).  FWD, but short enough to not really notice.  $37,500 is cutting it close for a S model - you really need $40k to get the LSD and a few options.  Reliability is a question mark for sure, also you don't have a local dealer (or maybe that has changed).  New ones are supposed to be better.

If I had to do the same thing for me today (ditch the Bimmer, keep the Audi and follow your constraints) I'd go Mini because I have local dealerships, I don't care that much about the soft top, and I need/want the extra room and steel roof.  I think you should go Miata as long as you can truely handle the lack of space - if not, the Mini.  To me the rest of the list is useless, just not the same kind of fun.

Thanks, David, any issues you see with winter driving (assuming 4 snows) with either of the Miata or the Mini?  The Miata particularily as it's RWD vs FWD for the Mini. OTOH, I grew up in Alberta with RWD cars always so I understand snow driving well.

I grew up driving heavy RWD cars in the winter with winter tires on and they were great. I also drove Mustangs in the winter with winter tires and it was a disaster. Light weight combined with a short wheel base does not allow much for reaction times. You need to be on you game to quickly react to a loss of traction condition and the rear end coming around very quickly. Not many drivers have the experience or skill sets for rwd cars anymore.

Little late to the game here Ovr, but it seems like you've compiled a good list. Of YOUR list, I would look at the Miata and the mini. THey certainly meet fun to drive and are both decent highway drivers as well. Good city drivers too. Not sure about good grocery getters. Don't know how biog the trucks are on both vehicles, but I would imagine that they aren't THAT big.

And here's my suggestion, and you knew it was coming. Volvo S40. I know you think it's TOO practical, but could you explain why? Another downside to the S40 is the when optioned out the way you like it, the price jumps quickly. However, whether you look at the base 2.4 or the T5, both meet the fun to drive factor since they both have good torque, decent interior room (back seat is a tad cramped but it doesn't really matter since it's just the two of you, no?), and attractive styling.

Another suggestion I wanna throw at you is perhaps a slightly used RX8? It's got fun to drive, good responsive handling, 4 seats, and a usable trunk.

Let's see... a used 3 series is an obvious choice as Driver suggested.

Mazdaspeed 6 would be fun to look at when they come out.

I know you said no DC products, but Benz doens't really count, does it? I was thinking a C-class coupe... I don't even know if they're still for sale for 06, but a used would can be had at decent prices, I've seen.

I'm sure I can think of more, but that's all I got for now.

Seriously, if I was spending $37,500 on car stuff, I'd probably buy an used Miata for three season fun and a 2006 Impreza 2.5i wagon for hauling stuff and winter driving.  A used STi can be had in that range now, but...

The "test it and see" is right-on.  My wife couldn't figure out my love of Subies when we had a small fleet of MB's in the family.  She'd see one on the road and think "goofy granola eater type of thing..."  Now she LOVES them!  Subaru is an aquired taste...
No place I'd rather be...

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I've got a lot of thinking, testing and evaluating to do over the next few months.

I will look at the lower end Volvos, Bullit, but don't really think that where I'm headed here. I think the top 3 right now are (in no order) - MIni, Miata, Civic Si (or even the LX).

Probably by the time I get it figured out, wife will want to keep the '99 Solara --  :banghead:

ovr, why did you say that you consider selling your Bullit and replace it by a new Mustang?
