Under $37.5k MSRP - Fun to Drive - ??
« on: October 27, 2005, 12:22:21 am »
There is some "chat" (means wife talks and I listen) going on here about getting back to a 2 vehicle family. Obviously I would let the Bullitt go and wife's Solara would be sold/traded (she has always said up to now that she wanted to keep it, but she is starting to think maybe not). She likes the Highlander and would drive it (but I like it also so we'll see). Anyway, the HL stays, period. Both the Bullitt and the Solara are owned by us with no debt owing on them. The Bullitt might have to wait to spring to sell it but who knows?

What I would want to replace those two would have to be:
- no more than $37,500 list price before taxes,
- doesn't need to carry more than 2, but 4 is OK
- doesn't need to carry Drake (115#s)
- would serve as main "grocery getter" and around town car
- would have to be drivable year round (with snow tires of course)
- has to be fun to drive (but not extreme like a S2000 or a WRX)
- doesn't have make long trips on hiways (but should be able to).

Knowing wife, I am not rushing into this as she may change her mind a few times yet. She is very practical and having 3 vehicles in the garage bugs her, particularily in the winter when the Bullitt is under wraps and not plated.

My initial thoughts are (new only so all 2006 models)(no particular order):
- Mazda MX-5 Miata w hardtop and A/C,
- Mini Cooper S coupe
- Honda Civic Si or even EX coupe (less than cost limit)
- Toyota Yaris (even less than limit)
- Mustang GT coupe (some concern about winter even with snows)

No Subies, no Saabs, no Saturns, no Audis, no DC vehicles, no smart cars, no trucks or SUVs please. Would look at GM but don't think there's much there that fits (love a Vette, forget it).

Others possible but less inclined:
- Acura RSX (TSX too pricey?)
- VW ????
- Solstice (don't think so, first year problems??)

What am I missing here?

CAVEAT - this is only the present situation - it could change based on wife's feelings.

A new Cobalt SS would do the trick as it will have sufficeint room for both of you and the groceries as well on occasion. Definitely under the price guide.  :)

Ohhh...didn't you and I just talk about this yesterday?  Changing the fleet again eh?  :)

37500 can get you into a TSX without navi I'd think.  You've got good choices listed.  If you are only looking new...how about:

Audi A3 (I know...no Audi's)
Volvo S40
Lexus IS250?
Mazdaspeed 6
Toyota Solara convertible
Mazda RX8

If you go used, you'd be in for a fun ride Ovr.....
Nissan 350Z
e46 BMW 3 series
e39 BMW 5 series
Honda S2000
Porsche Boxster
BMW Z3
the list goes on and on my friend...

Knowing you Ovr, if you don't get something you love, you'll be back on the market in 8 months.  :)

All of them would be great choices, imho.  My order of preference would probably go...

Civic Si
Mustang GT
Miata
Cooper S
Yaris

Of the group, the Yaris is probably the most practical but least fun to drive.  The Civic and Mustang are the middle ground - good performance with a useable back seat.  The Miata and Cooper are probably the least practical, but probably also the most fun to drive.

Overall, I think the best car for your money would have to be the Civic Si.  It's more powerful than anything save the Mustang and probably has better driving dynamics (although it is FWD), more eye catching (imho - will be less on the road than Mustangs) and certainly more reliable.  Not sure on the price of the GT, but is it cheaper as well?

Maybe a Tiburon Tuscani?  Although, imo, the Civic Si is better value for your money, even with a four banger.  Or the Mazda RX-8?  That's everything that comes to mind for me...

In that price range, I would almost certainly take the Civic Si and save the extra for aftermarket mods...  but that's me, not neccessarily you.

Afternote: I'm guessing you're looking for only brand new?  A lightly used S2000, 350Z, or WRX could probably be had for the price range, if you were so inclined.  :)

Ross - yes, I do...(sheepishly)...and my wife did mention that but she brought this whole thing up..so..we'll see..not getting too excited yet..

Demo - good feedback. I do like the new Civic coupes a lot but have not driven one yet. I suspect it is a good drive. The new Mustang GT really is a passion pick more than a logic pick on my part. The V8 wouldn't be the cheapest to run, and winter driving..MMmm?? Still, might work. And definitely be fun to drive. The Miata interests me quite a bit although it is likely one of the least practical of the group. Fun, open top in summer, hardtop for winter. Haven't driven the Yaris yet but would be practical, inexpensive to buy & run and could be fun (Ross??). Wife likes the Cooper but, again, haven't driven. Not cheap but will get under limit. No used ones (at least not in current thinking). And no S2000, WRXs etc. Agree rather have Civic Si over Tibby.

Mdx - no Audis, and I think the Volvo is too practical (maybe too pricey?). TSX - a possibility for sure. Lexus IS250 - don't think so - also $$. Rather have the Miata over the MazdaSpeed 6 (I think). RX8 - nope, $$ and rotary. Solara Convertible - nope, been there (coupe admittedly). Also not real fun. Maybe add the TSX to the list - maybe?? Not thinking used for now.

Saf - Miata is one of my favorites also. With the hardtop for the winter. Anyone have experience winter driving them with snow tires?? (Kelowna winters aren't too bad, a few days of wet snow and always black ice possible).

Barrie - Cobalt SS might be worth a look see. Must admit to little knowledge of this car other than reading.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Couple of your ideas are worth thinking about.

Davidm in Vancouver - any Miata feedback?? I like the looks of the new one, but haven't driven one.

Of the list, the Miata would also be on my short list.  That and the Saturn Sky.  The Cobalt SS is nice, as is the new Civic.  The Lexus starts at 36K for the RWD.  Not bad but options can move that number up quickly.  I'd be interested to see what you think.  Caddy CTS?  I'm thinking 4 doors....as most of the 2dr coupes have already been mentioned by you.  RSX is nice...good car.  The TSX is a good car for the money as well.  How about the Mitsu Eclipse?  Yeah....it's a Mitsubishi.  I know.

Mdx - think the Lexus won't make the $ cut off and not really sure I would want it. No Lexus dealer here but Toyota can get it. Still, I think too $$ and upscale for what I'm looking to do.  The Caddy is too big for what I want - mostly in town car. I'll still have the Highlander for hiway, 4 persons, etc. No Mitsus - just not interested. Hyundais are good value but not fun. No KIAs need apply.

Damn man....too many rules.  :)  You've got to either loosen the wallet and spend those millions you've got (somebody from western Canada won that $54mil 6/49 - was it you?), relax the rules, or else look at what's already on the impressive list.

I'd say the Civic would be my bet for an econo - cruiser.  If I wanted something nicer, the TSX would be the way to go...but I'd wait for a test run in the Mazdaspeed 6 just in case.  That should offer some sort of grin factor.

Nope, won't raise the limit, makes no sense to do that. I do have a good set of choices already. I want to be able to drive this car and not put it in the garage to look at and keep clean. So my list would be:

Front runners: MX5 Miata, Honda Civic Si coupe, Toyota Yaris, Mini Cooper

Also: but need more info: Mustang GT (I'd love it but costly to run, winter driving problem, might want to keep it too nice), TSX, RSX, Cobalt SS.

6/49 - Western Canada, you say. I'll check 'em tomorrow. Good luck to both of us.  ;D

It wasn't me.  I did not win the lotto this time around.  In fact, I didn't even buy a ticket.  I remembered that today was the day....at 5:55pm.  Ah well....you can never lose what was never yours.

since nobody mentioned it yet, how about an entry-level BMW 3 series... 323i?
base price starts at 35,200.  Add premium package ($2,200) and this brings you to 37,400

Ovr, by eliminating Subaru you have taken the best car off the list. The Legacy GT meets all of your criteria and offers performance of a $70k European Luxury Sedan for half the price.

The next logical choice would be the MazdaSpeed 6. Anything else is a compromise.

Yeah, what's with taking Subaru off the list?  It's obvious to me that the 2006 WRX would meet lots of those points.  You can get a sedan or wagon, manny-tranny with gobs of power and great handling.  I tested an 06 the other day, and WOW, it's a big improvement.  The 2.5L doesn't fall flat off boost like the 2.0 did.  The new exterior looks like the STi did.

For about $36K you get a performance car that can "get the grocieries."  With the changes to the 06, the WRX moved up on my list by many spots...
No place I'd rather be...

I should also have stated that the timing on this could be as late as next March so I've got all winter to think about it - should keep me busy.... ;)

Snowy, I know you love the LegGT but wife wants no more wagons (she also dislikes Subies) and I really don't think I want a wagon either. As to the MazdaSpeed6, I'll think about it but doubt it - isn't it pretty close to $40K?

Think if I were thinking BMW, I would look used - but I think that's too upscale for this purpose. And the Solstice is a no-go - no trunk, and too new (problems??).

Life is a compromise.  :D

BTW - the 6/49 ticket apparently is in Alberta - $54million - maybe it's one of my sisters or my brother.  ;D

Unless his groceries consist at the most of 1 bag at a time!  ;D

Ovr, why would you sell your Bullit and jump back into a Mustang? Wouldn't a new Mustang offer half of the performance you get out of the Bullit? Why not just sell the Solara and use the Bullit year round? Wouldn't that make sense?

And I honestly don't understand how you can even consider the Yaris... You realize that it's an Echo, right?

I think the Acura TSX would make a lot of sense... well equipped, good engine and transmission, low operating costs, extremely reliable, and fits right in your $ target...

Ovr….The LGT comes in a sedan version. Before you eliminate it from serious consideration go take one for a drive. The new LGT’s are an order of magnitude apart form the previous generation and you will change your opion of them…..your starting to sound like Barrie. ;)

The MPS6 MSRP’s out at $36k….6 speed only.
