I bought an '03 Ford Escape XLS.

It's cheap. It's cute. It's practical. And I can park anywhere I want.

The downside:

I'm going to have to buy a "real" off-roader.

So you don't really need a SUV  Grin ... how about a minivan!  (just kidding)

Welcome to the board.  We're friendly but we do have the usual "old couples" arguing on the same things for days.  You've been warned.

... the fact that we're planning a family isn't exactly something that make the manual tranny a better choice either.

Well I'll never use the extra room of the minivan's so that would be a waste. Plus they drive like sboxes imho (except odyssey, but it's like way more expensive). I wanted to look at wagons but if you see my comment about the forester I'm sure you can understand why my fiance wouldn't have let me buy that :/

And while manual tranny doesn't cause sterility it causes headaches with kids in the backseat Wink I intend to keep this veichle for 10ish years unless I develop a hate for it later Smiley

sigh

Nissan Canada has been total jerks about the fact that my fiance has some $200 in speeding/parking tickets. She even has the paperwork to prove that it's all paid for! But they're being jerks about it so who knows if I'm gonna end up with one. Had it as a done deal because it's just silly that 7 year old parking tickets that you've paid (and that you didn't know about) should stop you from buying a veichle.

Not pleased at all. Oh well, maybe the Subaru ppl won't be as silly, or I'll have to go to a bank :/ Shame that I'm from Sweden (moved to Canada 4 years ago to live with fiance) so I really don't have a credit history in Canada. Which is really a shame since I make more money than my fiance.

Sorry to hear about that problem with the credit rating. My wife went though a similar situation with a medical bill that our auto insurance company failed to pay and it went on her rating. Took along time to straighten that out. It had no effect on her ability to get the mortgage, but a black mark regardless.

hmm I guess all of a sudden the 200 ticket doesn't mean anything, these people are beyond fiction. unfortunetly so they claim the last black x-trail xe fwd in cdn has been sold so we're prolly getting a blue or a silver one. Need to take a peek again this weekend and then decide. sigh

Hopefully the dealership isn't as bad as the Nissan financing people. So far I've had no complaints about the dealership so I hope I don't get any nasty surprises....

That was a terrible thing to say!

I have 10 demerits (all speeding) and I do not consider myself a stupid biatch! I don't consider myself a bad driver, either. Just an impatient one.

I was joking, but if the shoe fits.
I have 10 demerits (all speeding)....just an impatient one… no offence, but both are major symptoms of a bad driver. I hope your young child is not in the car when you are receiving demerit points.

First let me explain that I do not speed through residential areas, school zones or when traffic is extremely busy.

Second, all but one of my tickets were on the highway. And that particular stretch of highway the speed limit is 80km/hr, which is absurd. There is open field on one side of the road, and woods (some 50m back) on the other side, its paved (twinned, actually), and it's straight and flat (like most Alberta highways). So there is absolutely NO REASON the speed limit should only be 80 km/hr, especially when there is a main road, one block away from a school in the city where the speed limit is 70km/hr. If you compare 70km/hr a block away from a school as opposed to 80km/hr next to nothing, 80km/hr is crazy. Since I do a considerable amount of highway driving, I have received two 3-demerit tickets for going 20km/hr over, one 2-demerit ticket for going 10km over and the other in-city ticket was for going 10km over on the city bypass.

I do not have the patience to drive an excruciating 80km/hr when the highway is clear, it's a gorgeous summer day and I have a family barbecue to go to in Fairview (an hour and a half away). In the city, I give myself enough time while city driving because Grande Prairie is too big for its roads, and I cannot afford an accident.

People hear speeding and think 'uh-huh...perfect example of a road-raging young person who doesn't consider other people on the road', but such is not the case. You cannot tell me that no one in this forum has ever sped, especially when high-way driving; and I know I'm not the only one who thinks some of the speed limits are ludacris.
