Mazda MPV (My Pathetic Vehicle)
« on: October 26, 2005, 08:11:43 pm »
My Mazda MPV eats water-pumps for breakfast.  Two days after repairing it this last time it blew and leaked coolant into my engine.  Mazda (dealer mechanic) told me the vehicle which is 4 years old is not worth fixing.  As the water pump is not covered by warranty neither is the engine.  So I am paying for an undriveable vehicle.

What?  A 4 year old vehicle not worth fixing?  Even if you need an entire new engine it can't be more than a few grand, that makes no sense.  I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge may be able to help you.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.......Resembles the same posting style as another 'post a statement and run' member....but I can't remember who it was (it's the age thing).

I'll wait to see if they ever show up again before I feel bad for them.

EDIT: Plus you'd think that if it was repaired two days prior there'd be some warranty or other route for the poster to go.

Maybe it's 4 years old with 300,000 km.

I do wonder what the milage is on this vehicle as this dosen't sound right unless the owner has driven the vehicle a considerable distance like this and has fried his main bearings. The car with antifreeze in the oil would be trailing pure White smoke rather heavy and should have been noticed before all that much damage was done. I realize not every person is up on the meaning of this but I do suspect he has done a lot of damage by not shuting this motor down before he did. Another motor from the wreckers may be in order.  :)

4 year old MPV?  I think they had the same motor as my Mystique: 2.5 l V6.

Yes, they eat water pumps if you replace them with the factory unit (plastic blades).  Get one with a metal impellor.

Leaking into the motor?  How?  Sounds like other problems there, like a head gasket.  I blew my water pump at 110 km/hr, up hill passing some guy, took a while before I noticed the temp gauge peg.  But the mechanic said that no water actually leaves the motor, so not much chance of overheating (unless you drive for an hour or something).  No damage to my car, in fact it ran very well after the new water pump was put in  ;D .

That 2.5 l V6 is considered to be a very tough motor (unlike the 4 banger in the Contour/Mystique).  It was the best part of that car.

If the work was done at a reputable place, there should be a warranty.  Nissan dealers warranty their work for 1 year/20,000 km.  Check for a warranty (unless you did it yourself).

Some friends of ours have a 4 year old MPV, they will never buy another Mazda as long as they live.  Lost of problems with it.  Maybe the Ford content?   :D

We've had only one issue with our 2002 MPV.  '02 was the first year with the 3L engine and 5-speed auto.  We had a flat from having run over a sharp object, and discovered that the mechanism that lowers the spare was seized up, requiring replacement under warranty.

The MPV was at the time the only Japanese-built van on the North American market, though that may have changed.  My impression is that only the 3L engine block is Ford-sourced, and that Mazda is 25% Ford owned, not 100%.

We chose it because we found it the most car-like of the minivans then available, and liked the slightly smaller dimensions.

CR liked the MPV in 2002 when we bought ours, but in 2004 the CR rating went down considerably.

I still have a high opinion of the MPV's and would recommend them to people if they liked it's attributes.

I own a 2002 MPV and am very satisfied. For a family hauler, I think there are a lot of worse options, and only a few that could be argued 'better'.

Mazda is making very compelling cars these days, MPV's included.
