02 subaru impreza outback winter tire/rim size
« on: October 26, 2005, 03:18:31 pm »
Hi Everyone

I hope someone can help me figure out what size rim I can use on my 02 impreza outback sport wagon.

The car comes with 16" wheels and I want to get 15" winter rims.  I've heard that the follwing tire sizes
will work 205/60/15 and 195/65/15.  I like the 195/65/15.

I can't figure out what size 15" rim to get.  The Subaru dealer doesn't seem to want to help me.  Maybe they
we upset when I told them I didn't want to spend $1500 on their winter tire package?

Tiretrends website shows "Steel Wheels - Steel Wheel - Take-off 15 x 6 Subaru 5x100 0mm (Black)"
Tirerack website shows rims that are 15x6, 15x6.5 and 15x7 but doesn't meantion the 5x100 0mm

What rim size should I get?

thanks a bundle!

15x6, 15x6.5, etc...the 6,6.5,etc indicates the width of the wheel.

For 195, a 6-inch wide wheel would be sufficient.

What about the 5x100?  Is that a standard bolt pattern for my car?

thanks again

Yes. 5x100 is correct.

and the 0mm is the offset which is important especially in winter* when you need all the grip at the front you can get.
Wrong offset = incorrect steering angles** = tires scrubbing not rolling= less traction than the optimum for the car.

* in summer it just wears out the front tires.
** the track that the tires followin a curve  is not the track which the car designer intended
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

2002-04 base Imprezas (the TS wagon) came with 15x6 inch steel wheels stock, with wheel covers, so those will fit your Outback Sport no problem. Usually when a tire dealer advertises take-off wheels those are wheels that actually came from the vehicle in question originally. What Tiretrends is advertising is what you want.

The 15x6 5-100 steels are specifically for the Subarus. We list a 0 offset in our system fo all of the steel wheels to keep them seperate from the alloys. They are actually a +45 to +48 offset. Mot elect to go with the 195/65/15 as it has a little narrower track, but either 195/65/15 or 205/60/15 is good.

$1500 ouch...

I'm with Morty!  $1500?   :o :o :o

We spent $1500 on a winter tire package recently for our Forester, BUT that also included a set of Blizzaks for the Mercedes!  We bought new steel wheels (15") and WS-50 Blizzaks for the Scoobiw and a set of Revo 1 Blizzaks (15") for my Benz and THAT was about $1500 including taxes and shipping from Morty.

You should be in the $800-900 range for new 15" steels and a high-end snow tire like a Blizzak or Ice-X.

Call TireTrends and forget the dealer.  Morty will ship you a set of pre-installed and balanced wheels and tires and all you'll need is an hour with a floor jack.
No place I'd rather be...

morty,

I am brand new here....

I have a question.  Is the +45-48 offset for Subarus the same for all model years?  I have a '97 Outback Sport that I want some steel rims for and want know all the dimensions.

Thanks,

Jim

Yes your outback will have the same offset requirements.
