CR-V or Santa Fe
« on: October 25, 2005, 06:28:36 pm »
Looking to purchase small suv in very near future.  Have narrowed it down to 2006 Honda CR-V se or 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe gl2.7awd.  Any thoughts from people who own or who have driven?  Thanks for any input.

Both models are good sellers, the Santa Fe is in its final year and the CRV has two years to go.  For my personal taste the CRV looks far far better, will retain it's resale value a lot lot more (if that matters).  The CRV is safer, the Santa Fe  tips in testing done by the NHTSA.  Fuel economy is excellent on the CRV while not so good on the Santa Fe, the reliability of the CRV should also prove to be better as well.  You should check with your insurer regarding rates to avoid surprises, the CRV rates are reasonable and I don't know about the Hyundai.  On the negative side for the CRV, it's probably pricier.

I think the Sante Fe is a far better looking vehicle...  but for practical purposes, you're probably better off with the CR-V.  If I may, why not the RAV-4?

Check out the weight of the Santa Fe, I think it's very heavy for its size. Apparently the V6 has to work pretty hard to move it rapidly. I would look at a newer Hyundai (say the Tucson) or go with the CRV (and I'm not a CRV fan either). Did you try the Nissan XTrail or wait for the new RAV4? Just thoughts.

They're actually both in their final year with their current design. I'd probably go with the CR-V if I had to choose now. The standard stability control is a plus in my book. The Honda certainly will hold its value better.

Consumer Reports, which had the Forester at the top of the pack in 2004, has put the CR-V alongside the Forester now due to addition of side and side curtain airbags, 16" wheels, and Vehicle Stability Assist. I'm biased as hell, but the CR-V does stack up well when you take into account reliability, resale value, safety ratings, fuel economy, and build quality. The Santa FE is pretty dated right now, due for a complete redesign at which time it will move upmarket to compete against the Pilot/Highlander. Right now the Tuscon is more competitive to the CR-V if you are talking about Hyundai product.

Look Just buy the Honda CR-V over the Hyundia - You're have years of trouble free motoring instead of headaches and you won't loose to much when you decide to sell - just forget the Hyundia -  the Santa Fe isn't that small - Look at the RAV-4 its a much better choice even

The current CRV came out in 03, the cycle is normally 5 years, therefore 08.

HSG, yes, no?

AS HSG indicates the Subaru Forester is rated the highest in the most recent Consumers Reports. If considering a Hyundai I would look hard at the Tucson before the Santa-Fe.

I echo the Tucson over the Santa Fe comments. When we looked at both, it beat out the Santa Fe in pretty much every area. Also as mentioned, wait for the new Rav4 to come out, and add it into the mix.

Thus, arriving at my nickname, as I too will be making this decision soon. :)

Actually the current gen CR-V came out in fall of 2001 as a 2002 model. It received the MMC (mid model change) last year for the 2005 model year. If Honda sticks to its normal 5 year cycle the all new CR-V wil debut in 1 year, as a 2007 model.

No problemo.  8)  I have a family member looking at small SUVs in this segment as well (seems like tons of people are). The current CR-V doesn't seem that dated to me, but with a brand-new RAV4 coming this year, Honda will need to refresh it to keep up.

they just DID a refresh 12 months ago for the 2005 model year...nobody can make significant changes to their vehicle every year. For 2006 the news is the SE package giving you alloy rims, fog lights, roof rack cross bars, and side step rails, for $1100 more than last year''s CR-V LX model.

A year from now the 2007 CR-V will likely have between 180 - 200 HP, a Hybrid version, and an updated 4WD program.

Thanks for all the speedy replies.  Have been leaning towards the CR-V, plan to go drive it again tomorrow then hopefully negotiate a good price.
Might go and look at Tuscan if negotiations don't go well!
Cheers!

Even if the payment or total bottom line figure on the CR-V is more than a comparably equipped Tucson, remember that any Honda will tend to make most if not all of that up on resale.
