Volvo XC50
« on: October 19, 2005, 10:07:45 pm »
GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Volvo is developing a smaller off-roader than its existing XC90.

The car, which could be called XC50, will be pitched directly into the growing compact-SUV sector as a rival to BMW's X3, Toyota's RAV4 and sister company Land Rover's Freelander.

Volvo won't confirm the project, but the sector is so lucrative Volvo is finding it hard to resist. Insiders suggest it could be unveiled as a concept car at one of next year's major auto shows. The vehicle could share its platform with the next-generation Freelander and the forthcoming Jaguar "crossover," which would allow Ford to leverage more volume from the small Land Rover's underpinnings.

Automakers are scrambling to get into the compact-SUV sector; new models in the pipeline include the new RAV4 and Freelander, the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Mercedes X-Class and a forthcoming Volkswagen Golf-based off-roader. Audi is also believed to be eyeing the sector; its offering would be called Q5.

It could possibly be launched MY2007. Here is a pic of what it could look like:

Not bad at all. Stays true to the Volvo lineage and looks like an XC90 'lite'.

That platform - is it originally from the Escape/Tribute though? I know the new Freelander/Jag versions are coming but I think the heritage of their platform goes back to the others. Could be wrong.

Looks like a V50 with a lift kit added.  Not too original...

Keep in mind that the pic is only what it COULD look like.

Here is some more info (courtesy of S60) on the platform, inco.

EUCD

The long wheelbase "C1-Plus" version of C1 will be called EUCD internally. It was chosen by Ford's European operations instead of the Mazda-designed CD3 platform due to the large number of components shared with the smaller C1. Another factor was reportedly the inability of the CD3 to accept Volvo's straight-5 engines. The first EUCD car, Volvo's C70, will be built by Pininfarina Sverige AB in Sweden.

Future uses of this platform include:

2006 Volvo C70 coupe/convertible
2007 Land Rover Freelander SUV
Volvo XC50 SUV
Volvo XC60 SUV
Volvo S60 sedan
Volvo V70 station wagon
Next-generation Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute
2009 Ford Mondeo
2009 Ford Galaxy
2009 Jaguar X-TYPE

Volvo has been done a great job in design their cars since Ford bought it...
Its not offensive and is modern at the same time.

I personally like it a lot!

Ford has little to no influence on the design aspect of Volvo cars. Volvo has been making the cleaner "reVolvolutionary" designs since the introduction of the S80.

The "rounded with shoulders" look made it debut on the 1992 ECC concept.

Ah yes, forgot about that concept.

I was talking about actual production models though.

 :iagree:

Exactly BB….that is why Volvo will succeed and Saab will fail.

XC50 looks cool!      A replacement for the aging XC70?  I would look into it.

I like the looks of that proposed XC50 - in fact, I like the looks of most of the new Volvos. Sure beats the heck out the 1972 142E sedan I once had (very briefly). Swedish tractor was the term used to describe Volvo styling then IIRC.  :D

Maybe BB can chip in here Ovr to correct me if I'm wrong, but if you had the 142 it was a two door. The 144 was the four door. We had one of each.

Inco - that is correct - the 142E was a 2 door sedan, not a 4 door. I only had it a few months as I had just sold a nice 1970 BMW 2002 and the 142E just didn't feel right after that one - I then went back to BMW.
