Impreza Questions
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:31:12 pm »
I LOVE MY RIDE !!!

loving my impreza too much i don't need a house!  i can be on the road forever.

my comments so far:
----------------------------
1.  handling - very, very imprezzive!  can't believe so much fun can be derived out of plain cornering.  it really feels good it can give me an orgasm on a fine day.  he he he...
2.  gas mileage - a big percentage of my budget originally allocated to food basic and no frills was diverted to sunoco and petro canada.  and it has just been a few days.  well, to be fair, this is partly because i hardly park, i go out and drive around every chance i get.
3.  the pig snout - like most of y'all good people in this forum said, love it or hate it.  it caught some attention alright.  me, i love its agressively ugly stare.
4.  road noise - what road noise?  maybe i need some q-tips, but those who noticed it, dang, johnny, it's not like you'll be recording an album in it, will you?
5. comfort - i'm sure there are better cars on this range that provide better overall comfort (leg room, ease of seating, arm rest, better cup holder, etc.), but i have no big fuss on this department.  if it ain't giving me legcramps and backache, it's comfy enough.
6. appearance, in-person - the pics and the websites don't give the appearance the justice it deserves.  it's more beautiful in person.
7. sound system - the crappiest sounding stereo i've ever heard ona new car.  why did they even bother to put one?  they should have just left the wires hanging and the slots open and leave it to the owner to install their own stereo and speakers.

now, a few questions:
------------------------------
1. how do i remove the roof rack?  it will leave holes where the screws fasten the racks onto the roof, right?  how do i plug those holes?  do i need to?  i just don't like the appearance of the racks.  and i don't need 'em.

2. is it easy to replace the stereo?  the speakers? i fiddled around the speaker casings and i couldn't figure out how to open the darn thing.  i'm afraid i may damage the sides of the outer plastic cover if i pry it open forcibly.  also, i read sowhere here that there's no speaker insulation which causes the bad sound.  anything i can do about that?  or, should i just get a pro to do it?  but, i wanna save some dough... for food basic and no frills.

3. when i get tired of the grille and the bumper, i will replace them with a custom made set.  makes me wonder, any website you know of that makes subaru custom body kit?  prob'ly no 2006 yet.

thanks to y'all.   btw, my sis and her husband will start posting here soon too, if they haven't done so.  (dang, now the whole family's into this!  :-)  they're prospecting to lease a gm or a ford.  i (and maybe jeff did too) recommended this forum to get some valuable real end-user info.

Gracias, amigos y amigas!

I will only ask one thing regarding only one of your questions - I would not try to remove the roof rack as it must be attached by penetrating the roof itself, by removing it, you will have holes that need plugging and I feat that moisture could still get it and cause rusting. I would leave it alone even if you don't like the looks of it. Just my opinion.

And my '02 Impreza was noisy as hell, one of the worst, so I'm glad you think the new one is OK in that dept. Subie may have added some sound deadening material in 4 years.

When I test drove a 2004 WRX wagon I thought it was very quiet.  Mind you, I drove to the dealer in my 356 Porsche replica. ;D

Sterero speaks are generally pretty straightforward to replace...  just figure out how the remove the old ones (sounds like the toughest part) and buy the same size for new ones.  They should come with universal mounts, my Pioneers did.  I installed those myself - if I can do it, you sure can.  :)  And mine were missing the instructions...

What do you mean by custom body kit?  A proper custom job wouldn't come cheap - but you can probably find a fairily inexpensive aftermarket solution (try ebay...).

The first thing I tore out was the OEM sound system in my ’02 WRX…..embarrassing. Next was the turbo, up/down pipes/ mid pipes, muffler, wheels, tires, fuel pump, fuel injectors, hood scoop, front grill, and the ecu programming….once you start it is hard to stop…thank you for shopping at Subi-Mart.

Enjoy your Scooby.

My '04 Impreza isn't overly noisy either. It's no Lexus but it's competitive in its segment. The grumbly boxer engine polarizes opinion somewhat.

Check out nasioc.com as well as scoobymods.com for all you ever need to know about modifying your Impreza. The car's been on the market long enough that anything you'd want to do has already been done and written up with a how-to, with the exception of modifying the front end, I'd guess. It is possible to remove the roof rails but it's an involved job. Changing speakers and HU is a popular mod. Pretty sure you'll need to take the door panels off to get at the speakers. I have the optional tweeters in my car and they help somewhat, but you'd certainly get a better result by installing new speakers all around.
