Older Chevy V-8 (esp 350ci) and the Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge slant 6 are some of the best and most reliable motors ever made. The straight inline 250ci 6 that was in my Chevelle was built like a tank. It gave over 30 years of service before I pulled it for some more fun (the original owner put on 29 of those years). Heck the motor is probably still going in another car now.
