Pathfinder 2005
« on: October 07, 2005, 07:10:19 am »
Hi everyone,

I have a Pathfinder SE 2005 for 6 month now.  That truck is fabulous.  Nothing is wrong.  Very confortable, on road and off road.  Very effective to on off road.  The engine is powerful, well for what I use it for.  I towed a camping trailer this summer (4500 pounds) and it did the job perfectly.  OK, there is one bad point so far(but I knew about it) it's expensive on gas but it's ok.  I love the appearance of that truck, it's control when I drive it.  Before bying it, I have test-drived the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Pathfinder.  My opinion is that the Pathfinder is better at all point.  Confort, control, etc...  I did not went off road with the GC.  Any way, I will not use my Path. for off road in majority.  The rear places, thirds row seat, is perfect for me because I have young kids.  The second row is perfect for an adult, no problem with that.  One thing that I think they should upgrade, is that third row seat, I think that the back of the seat should be reclinable.  But if it would be reclinable, there would not be any room in the trunk so, nothing is perfect.

I was wondering, they say that the recommanded fuel is 91 of octane for better performance.  In the user book, they say that 87 is ok.  Any suggestion???
Thanks in advance...
(By the way, I love that site (forum))

87 can be used with a reduction in performance.  91 is recommended to acheive best performance results.  No harm going with regular.  I have the same option with our MDX.  I stick to 91.  What does your dealer/service department  say?

Welcome to the forums pathfinder05.

If the users manual says 87 is ok then it is.   The engine control computer can presumably take advantage of 91 to get a couple more horsepower and you might find that 91 will work better if you drive at hoigh altitude while towing.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

What you have is a motor that is designed to run on 91 octane or better,  but for marketing purposes only, Nissan states that regular can be used.   ::)

What happens is that the motor starts to detonate and the knock sensors pick that up and the main computer retards the timing and such to compensate otherwise eventually the motor would self destruct.  I hate when companies do this.  BMW doesn't quite stoop this low.  They phrase it like this "when premium fuel is unavailable regular fuel can be used with a decrease in performance."

With this Pathfinder you will come out ahead economically (mileage) if you use the premium.  Many buyers of these vehicles will walk out of the showroom if they learn that the vehicle requires  premium fuel.  But Nissan knows it will run poorly without premium so thay disguise this tiny factoid from the buyer until of course they get home and actually read the manual. :P

So if one uses regular in an 05 Pathfinder essentially the motor is pre-igniting and detonating it's entire life to some extent. :o

Cool you are happy with your Pathfinder...

I am very happy with my 05 GC, love the ammount of new features on the car, and will, for sure, buy something of the vintage when its the time for a new vehicle comes...(read SRT8).

BTW i always leave my SUV with smiles after using my 340hp-Hemi-engine... :P...

How do you leave the 'GC' when you remember it has sub-par reliability, poor build quality and that it's value is falling faster then a stone?

Seriously, don't come on here and thread crap about how great your, IMO, POS is... Go start your own thread. ::)

Cut Multi some slack...he's still got a chubby for the HEMI power in his GC.  He didn't slag the Pathfinder, and the GC was mentioned previously in this thread.

Anyway, if the car calls for premium fuel, why not?  Cost?  It's an extra couple bucks a fill up.   :-*

Pathfinder05 - I would use the 91 octane, as has been stated, the engine runs much better on it and the cost is maybe a couple hundred a year for the average driver. I have an 05 Highlander, and the Manual states the same - 87 is OK, but 91 is recommended. I use 91.

The 05 Pathy is a nice looking rig.  :)

Indeed, your Pathy is designed for 91 octane.  It's a nice truck - took a long look at it this year when my parents were deciding between it and the 4Runner.

I have a friend who drives a volvo requiring premium fuel - he fills with enthanol blended fuel from Mohawk, 90 octane I believe.  He's been driving Volvos for years and doesn't seem to have a problem.

Will the Nissan be different?? Shrug, who knows...

Owned a 1993 Pathfinder for 8 years.  The best vehicle I've ever owned.  The only reason I sold it was I really missed having a pickup truck, and I sucked, big time, when it came to backing up with a trailer. :P
The new Pathfinder looks great.  I really like the new Frontier pickup too.

He is only one point down from the recommended 91.  The effect of lower octane shows up when the car is older; 10 years/200,000 km

I have an 02 Pathy, great truck.  I use it hard, as a work truck in the woods and only use regular fuel.  I get 25-27 MPG on the highway and do not notice any decrease in power.  The manual says to use premium but seems ok with the lower grades.

Same thing with our Sienna (except the use in the woods part  :o )
