Are Viking Snowtech Winter Tires Any Good?
« on: October 04, 2005, 02:47:11 pm »
I currently own a 2002 Camry LE V6 running a set of Nokian Hakka 1's for the winter.  I am looking to replace the winter tires this winter.  The Nov 2005 edition of Consumer Reports rated the Viking SnowTech (made by Continental) to be very good.

Has anyone used this tire and has some feedback about them?  Also, what other tires are good? I need a P205/65R15 size and located in the Toronto area.

Uh, could it be possible that there are no members with personal experience with Viking Snowtech tires?   :D

New ratings from Consumer Reports (November 2005).

Rank second best of the list.

CR :"The Viking  is worth considering where winters are moderate or roads are cleared promptly. It handles and brakes very well on dry and wet pavement, and it rides comfortably and quietly."

Can't be sold by Eaton's as they are long gone and they used to have tons of stuff called "Viking". Never heard of Viking tires tho. Nov05 CR mag you say? Have to check on that.

Don't know anything about them but found this.  Looks like it's made in Sweden and owned by Continental.  Formerly known as Nivis Tires(1992)

The consumer reports article was why I asked this question.

Found the price for a 205/65R15 to be about $84/tire for the Viking, vs the $140/tire for the Nokian Rsi.

According to the review, the RSI ranked considerably lower then the Viking.  I currently have the Nokian Hakka 1's (now called the Nordman 1) and they were excellent in the snow but damn noisy.  I am looking to replace them with something quieter and good for Toronto and the GTA driving.

I drive Hakka2's in the winter - and road noise is barley noticeable.

...............I have a friend who is a driver for a local parts store, they put Hakka2's on all of their delivery cars each winter because the tread ware is excellent and the road noise is almost nil.

Was looking at the Hankook W300 and just luckily happened to call a place in the GTA called Tireworks, located at
Dixie and 401.
Got to talking to the sales rep and he mentioned that they sell the Viking Snow Tech!!

Hope this helps and it's what you're looking for.

I bought a set for my 03 Jetta from Cheap Thrills in Milton.  They are very quiet and comfortable.  So far the worst I've driven with them on the car was the cold rain Toronto has recieved over the past month.  Great wet handling.  I'm pretty happy with them.  Paid $420 for the set in Milton to get mounted on my factory alloys.

If they're for an Echo, you got hosed.  If they're for an Expedition, you did very well.  Anything in-between, is somewhere in-between.

Besides, it hardly matters anymore.

Sorry, having a bad e-day.

*shrug*  Compare to Hankook or Kumho on the TireTrends site.  Maybe Morty works out better.

I searched and found good reviews on the net.  This company is in Scandanavia (where they should understand snow tires) and is owned by Continental.

I just installed four 195/55/15H on my Miata a couple of weeks ago for $460 including installation and all taxes
at Tireworks in Mississauga (905-565-1398).

The tires handle much better on clear roads than my previous blizzaks which quite frankly were awfull on a Miata.  Snow and ice grip with the blizzaks were outstanding however.  Miatas are very tight handling and sensitive to tires.

They seemed good on one inch of snow, but I don't know how they will fare on ice and deep snow.  Time will tell!

Good Luck,

Well I got to try out the Vikings today on my Miata as we got about 15cm today and it is still coming down.

I thought the grip was pretty good, but not quite as good as my previous blizaks.  The roads are really greasy though because of the temps and are basicallly fresh snow on top of slush.

Still I did really well, but saw two suv's that wiped out in ditches. It is predictable around here that in the first couple of snowfalls that the suvs (probably with all season tires) wipe out.  They think that they are supermen with their 4 wheel drive but forget that the laws of physics apply to them in braking and turning.
