nuts and bolts of selling privately or otherwise
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:42:33 am »
We are interested in purchasing a vehicle from a family member. To do this we will need to sell our 2000 Montana van (extended body) (106,000 km). I am not sure where to begin and hopefully finish such a procedure. ie

  • how to obtain a realistic selling price for our van
  • how to sell it privately
  • paperwork involved
  • dealer an option if not buying another vehicle from them?

I appreciate your advice.

1. Reference www.autotrader.ca if in Ontario for prices.  There are about 100 year 2000's for sale.

Below is an example.  This unit is a private sale, full tint with bug deflector which usually indicates an owner that has some respect for the vehicle.

Year: 2000
Make: PONTIAC
Model: MONTANA
Model Detail: EXTENDED
Price: $7,250
Mileage: 145,000 km
Date: 10/4/2005
Ad Type: Private
Comment: Auto, fully loaded, AC, CD, roof rack, alloys, fog lights, ABS, captain seats, silver, 2 sliding doors, new tires, cert. and e-test. 145,000 km, $7,250.

2.  Place van in the Autotrader.  I would start at $8500 certified if in good condition.  You never mentioned the trim level.

3.  You need a Safety Standards Certificate good for 36 days and the Ontario Government's Seller Package which will outline the PST payable.

4.  Dealer is not a good option.  Corner used car dealer might give you $4000.

BTW, between certain relatives there is no sales tax payable vis-a-vis your family purchase or gift.

FYI, the Canadian Black Book price for your vehicle is between $5,191 and $7,441.  (If it's the SE or Vision model and includes either rear AC or a power RH door, it will be slightly more.)  That's roughly the range of prices you would expect to get as a dealer trade, but if you're buying the new vehicle from a family member, a trade may not be feasible.  You might be able to get as much as $9,500 or thereabouts for it in a private sale if it's in good condition, depending on your region of the country and the supply/demand situation is in your local market.
