rx8 woes
« on: October 01, 2005, 08:45:29 pm »
My3 month old rx8 has dealt me another reliability blow ( catalytic converter at 400 km ) with an engine replacement ( under warranty @ 4800 km ) for a coolant leak between the rotors.

This is a allegedly a " first "  for my dealership, but I know that nothing is new under the sun  out there, so is there anyone else who has had an engine suffer the same fate?

Otherwise, the car has been fantanstic ( ha, ha. )

wizard, welcome to the forum.  There is only 1 other RX8 owner on this forum that I know of and he has had no engine replacement for sure.  I suggest you visit www.rx8forum.com for that specific question.  Do a search I'm sure you'll find something.

Sorry to hear about the troubles.  Can you tell us about your opinion on the RX-8? Pros, cons, gas milage, if you would make the same purchase again...

Sorry to hear about your woes. My friend's RX-8 has been trouble-free from day 1, and the only thing he complains about is the need to regularly add oil and the poor gas milage. But those are just the standard quirks you put up with for the rotaries.

In spite of the problems that I have had with the car, I would still buy another one.  The ride, handling, and fit/finish are so good that it makes other vehicles that I have owned seem lifeless. It is simply a riot to drive.  It reminds me of the go-carts that I used to drive at Wasaga Beach when I was a kid.

I have read on other forums that other owners have had similar problems and managed to get a new engine out of it, so at least I am not alone.  It does make one wonder about the long term life of the engine.  Thank God for extended warranties.  Also, my dealership has been excellent with service and will provide me with a vehicle during the time mine is in the shop.

8??  Is that what you get or the numbers it is suppose to get?  I never got close to 8.  I got like 10-12 highway even being VERY light footed.  Went to toronto empty tank in 400km  all highway.

Doesn't the S2000 keep revs up on the highway by gearing ratio default?

I can't remember from the last time I drove one.

I know the RSX-S does, and that they addressed the issue on the '06 Civic Si (with almost the same tranny) to allow for better highway fuel consumption.

I"m talking Rx8, the fuel mileage was horrible, I can bet about 8-9 on the highway with the S2000.  The RX8 was no where close.

No it's not that high I don't think, maybe 3000, maybe a little more, it's quiet so you can't tell.

Oh yes I remember how the engine keeps pushing higher but feels tamely happy at whatever rpm.   I can remember reading somewhere that it also sucks fuel at low rpm by design, so it's hard to drive economically at any engine speed.

Wizard,
Sorry to read of your problems with the 8. As Wing already mentioned I've had no issues with the car since new other than someone hitting it in a parking lot...not relevant in this case I know.
Your mileage seems really good if you are getting anything near 8 ltr/100 km. Normally it is around 10-12 also as Wing mentioned. Mazda could've tweaked the 2005 models computer since Wing purchased his (2003) to improve the range but highly unlikely to the extent that you would get 8 ltr/100 km.

Wing

When my new engine is in place ( it is in the garage as I speak,  replaced by a Chevy Malibu ) I will retest the mileage.
I drive almost exclusively in the city, but I will take a trip out on the 407 and see how the mileage is.  I was surprised (pleasantly) with the results, but it was a hot day in the summer.  Once the cold weather arrives, I am sure it will get worse.

Most distance I ever got in the 8 was 453 km and I think I was running on fumes when I pulled into the pumps.
I don't mind the fuel ecpnomy but I just wish I had more range with the 8. I hate stopping.
