Wanted: Chassis for old Austin Healey Sprite
« on: September 26, 2005, 03:48:11 pm »
Hi folks,
I am looking for a Chassis for an Austin Healey Sprite.
Anyone know of a scrap yard or such in Canada who has some ?

Any other suggestions on where else to look ?

Thanks,
Derek

I have a friend with a 1961 AH Sprite - whole car minus engine/tranny. Some assembly required but amazingly rust free body. I think he wants $500. Located in Calgary, AB.

If not try putting an ad in http://www.britishcarforum.com or the local bargin finder.

That would be the MkII, first after the frogeye, is that what you want?

You could also place an add in Old Auto's Newspaper which coverages all makes and models across Canada. Its amazing what you can find in their publication or advertise looking for as well.  :)

Thanks. I'm just getting started - not too much to see yet. Stripping the donor car currently - interior and just about all the wiring is out. Next up is the mechanical bits then I can dispose of the body. I should be able to start welding the frame a couple of weeks.

here are some pics: http://photobucket.com/albums/v197/arthurdent/Locost/

nothing too interesting yet  :(

Donor car Saf        a reasonable engine and transmission for a 7   In fact I think Caterham used them for some time so engine mounts and stuff are available

Not even someone with a name like Arthur Dent would want a Ford
Prefect engine  ( which was ofteren used in the Lotus 6)

That is a 86 Hyundai Stellar - suspension is identical to the old Ford Cortina which is what most kits use - so suspension setup is easy. The motor is a bullet proof Mitsu 4G32 with a 5spd stick. Basically I'm taking front spindles, rear axle, engine/tranny and throwing away the rest of the Stellar. Then I'm going to weld up the space frame, add the body panels, some nice minilite knock off wheels and have myself a nice Lotus Seven clone at a fraction of the cost of a Caterham or similar.

I really don't want the flat head motor from the Prefect - slow even in those lighter 6s. A friend of mine has a nice 1600 Ford Crossflow but its got an automatic attached to it and I don't want to go through the bother of converting to manual.

Sorry to continue the thread-hijacking, Dalexop....

I echo (Yaris? ;)) Saffy's comments, Arthurdent. That's a great project you've got going there.  I look forward to seeing your progress...and the finished product, of course.

Is it just me, or is the fact that Arthur Dent is discussing the Prefect kinda spooky?

Neat stuff, whatever you plan to do, AD.  Don't panic, or else the Vogons will read you some bad poetry.  Suggest you paint a large 42 on the side once it's done.  And don't forget your towel.   ;)
