The base price including freight PDI, etc is $25,646.  Subaru dealers aren't known for haggling a whole lot, nor are they making a huge profit off the car (about $1200).  I was told by a friend of mine that the local dealer expects to make about $800 off every car they sell before I went in to negotiate.  Low and behold, I received a  discount of about $400.  Then as they were trying hard to close the deal, I just started asking for accessories, cargo cover, tray, net, all season floor mats, armrest extention, etc.  The other bonus, they gave me $600 more on my trade in than anyone else was willing to give me.   Price wise, I felt good about it.

As for cons, every car has some and this one does too.  The stereo just sucks!  The factory system in my 83 tercel was better than this.  I plan on rectifying this problem soon.  There is no cargo area light, not a huge deal, but should be there.  There is some road noise, but I don't find it any worse than my old protege5 (or any small car that I have owned).  Even with the armrest extention, I cannot comfortably rest my arm there like I could in my P5.  My list of pros is very long and far outweights the cons.  It's a terrific car for the price.  I did drive a leftover 05 before making the purchase.  I hated the 05, but loved the 06.  Quieter, more power, seems more refined.

I looked at getting a Mazda3 Sport or the Impreza.  What it came down to is I work two jobs and have to get around easily in the winter.  Even with winter tires, the P5 was not cutting it.  I decided I wanted awd and didn't want an SUV, nor did I want to spend $30,000+ for another car with awd (well at least not right now!).  Take one out for a test drive.  The dealer let me have one for almost 2 days so I was really able to use it as I normally would.

Wiffy is having second thoughts on the Honda Ridgeline and wants me to look into an awd car, preferably a hatch/wagon. She also would like to reduce the lease monthly payment by $150-$200…… stupid accounting courses >:( .

She does not want to drive the family hauler anymore and for the 4-6 times a year we need one we will rent an SUV from Tilden.

I am now looking to get a 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Sport Wagon or Saab 92x. I am also keeping my eye on LeaseBusters for an A4, V50, V70, WRX Wagon, and any other interesting awd car with 24-36 months left on the lease

The only real competition to the Impreza in an entry level AWD hatch is the Suzuki Aerio SX AWD, at around $24 000.  So if you want AWD and hatch capability in relatively reliable Japanese packages, these seem to be your only two options.  I think the AWD Vibe and Matrix are significantly pricier...

Suzuki is also offering 5yrs financing, 0% interest with 0 down...

k.  so, i went to the dealership.  it is one nice looking wagon.  haven't decided yet, but i'm picturing in my head my impreza sport wagon standing side-by-side with my bro's g6.  (still can't beleive he chose pontiac!  i swear mom dropped him head first when he was a baby.)  he's been trying to get on my nerves saying awd is overkill here in gta.  that true?  is it an overkill?  he said 95% of folks 'round here get along fine with fwd, why would i need awd.  i admit, he got me there.  do i really need to bleed a li'l more $s for awd drivetrain?  but, i guess, come winter time i'd be laughing, right?, right?  i mean, he's right too, i haven't experienced driving an awd on snow so i won't know the difference between an fwd and awd on snow.  i was just goin by what folks here say about the advantage.  he really got me there, the s.o.b.

If you're a decent snow driver and you have 4 decent winter tires (not all-seasons), you do not need AWD at all. It's handy in a few situations but many ppl get by winter just fine with FWD (and RWD too for that matter).

AWD adds weight and complexity. If you don't think you need it, don't get it.

I get around just fine in Edmonton in my one-wheel-rear-wheel-drive Mercedes.  The car goes to the mountains, and again, no problems.

However, we have had an AWD car in the family for a few years now, and I really like them.  I can see the benefits of AWD when combined with winter tires.  AWD without wineter tires is dumb.  You lose the real benefits of AWD.

One benefit of Suabru's AWD system is that it's proven effective and very reliable.
No place I'd rather be...

look it, this is my point:  i want a wagon that's powerful enough and reliable.  matrix/vibe is under-powered;  mazda 3 sport's reliability in the long run is a question mark; the other comparable featured/spec'd choices (saab, volvo) are way, way over my budget; suzuki oreo, err... aerio has its fans, it may be good... i don't want to offend anybody, but it's just not for me.  this leaves the impreza sport wagon and it just happened to be an awd which is a huge plus.  but, i like it first and foremost coz it fits my three top criteria -- within my budget, with enough power and proven reliability.  it's not that much more expensive than matrix/vibe and m3s.

another thing i just found out: insurance of impreza 2.5 wagon is much lower than m3s and matrix.  could it be because it is a wagon so it is also considered a "mom's car"?

ovr50, when u said awd adds complexity, did u mean driving and maintaining it, or the overall mechanics of the car that 'common joe' shouldn't really bother about?  other than in fuel economy, could awd be a disadvantage?

russ_acosta, the Impreza ia a good buy and Subaru is a very reliable brand.  I would suggest that you talk to the Subaru service manager and get all the maintenance facts for this model, then you will know what you are getting yourself into.  I believe it's not much different than any other car, you will pay a for a bit more fuel that's normal for an AWD and the fact that you can't turn off the system like the X-trail.

Russ - yes, I meant complexity in the mechanicals, but that is one thing you are not likely to be fussing with anyway. It does not add complexity in driving (except you can't "hang the a$$ end out" if that is fun for you).

Long as you understand the trade-offs and like the Impreza - get it. It's a good package. Good luck.

The economy penalty for AWD is more in the extra weight that has to be accelerated than in driving all 4 contact patches and some extra shafts.

I am convinced that true awd ( all four wheels receive torque 100% of the time with no manual intervention) is a boon under all driving conditions except possibly a straight warm dry road.  the Subaru system  is one of the best.
Audi's quattro in  a fore and aft engined model equal.
Porche, older BMWs  with 68% reara and 32% front fixed work well  and I believe that the Acura RLs system is good.

Most of the others ( not sure about M-B)  are part time....even the new BMW X-drives can put all the power to one end or another and the HAldex ( Volvos, transverse engined Audis)systems wait until slip is detected before transferring.

Subarus have a tremendous reliability record.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

i took the plunge!  me gonna get my 2.5i wagon next week.  never had a few days felt like years befo'.  can hardly wait!
when i was at the dealership, i overheard this dude say why should a car this good look this ugly.  i laughed.  he asked 'you gonna get one of these ugly things?'  i said, yeah.  he said, 'you gonna love it, nobody else would coz the stylings really repulsive.  but i'm gonna get one too next year.'
that, i think is a paradox.  people don't say something's ugly and then want to have it.  don't you think so?  for me, it's not really that ugly.  it ain't infinity g35, but it ain't a trash bin either.
