2006 Subaru Forester XS
« on: September 20, 2005, 05:10:14 pm »
Has anyone had a chance to drive the 2006 Subaru Forester with the 173 hp non turbo engine? Does it perform noticeably better than the 165 hp engine of the previous model? Thanks...

I can't comment on the new engine, but one thing I did notice on the old was how the horizontally positioned engine (boxer) tended to make the car wobble side to side when you turned the car on/off.  Besides some historical gasket leaks, it's a good engine and the bump in HP will not be very noticable.

Drove the 2005, and didn't notice a "wobble" on startup.  Thought it was wonderful, with remarkably good highway acceleration (which I value more than acceleration from a stop).  The new one can't be any worse.

the "wobble" is a unique signature of subaru engines... or could it be improper engine mounting?  ???

i noticed that too in my old Impreza OBS... I find it annoying though... a 27K car, and it wobbles like an out-of-tune engine.

People have been raised on cars with their engine mounted the wrong way.  Engines have long crankshafts, and that long axis should be aligned with the length of the car.  the transmission should be behind the engine close to the center of the car and a driveshaft or towrque tube runs to the rear final drive.  If you wish AWD, you simply use a transfer case to take power to a front final drive unit.

RWD or AWD.
No place I'd rather be...

Haven't driven a 2006 yet, but the word from those who have compared it directly with a 2005 is that there is a noticeable difference in terms of power--the new engine feels livelier, particularly lower down in the rpm range where the previous 165-hp engine was a little slow to build revs. Go with the 5-speed if you can; I have the stick in my '04 Impreza and it suits this engine best.

I have an 06 Impreza with the new motor and it does feel more powerful than the old motor (I drove and 05 and an 06 back to back).  On paper there shouldn't be much of a differnce, but subjectively, there is.
