Comparo Tests
« on: September 15, 2005, 04:21:30 pm »
Just wondering why there are no comparo tests (or very little) done from Canadian Driver? I mentioned in the 9-3 SportCombi thread that it would be nice to see a direct comparo of the V50 and the SportCombi. Usually there are great articles of a certain car, then it's competition is listed, but I have rarely seen any direct comparos. The last comparo sparked great discussion (the 50L challenge) and that was just discussion fuel economy, not the cars themselves. I usually read the comparos done by different webistes, for example C&D's entry luxury sport sedan comparo. It's good for those who are actually cross shopping in certain segments as well.

Just a suggestion :)

That's a good suggestion. However, I think to be useful, they'd have to written in the multiple editor format where different writers can weigh in with their likes and dislikes.

Comparison articles written by a single author just end up as displays of the individual's tastes/biases, whether intentional or not.

I'm guessing they don't do it as ranking a car at the bottom would :censor: off the advertisers. Worst thing about North American auto reviews is they seem to like everything unless its a real dog like a Kia Rio or something. Even then they sugar coat it. I like Canadian Driver but if want the dirt on a car its not the place to come. Something like the http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/ is good for that (check out the Tribecca review).

Man I LOVE that site!!!

Here's what they say about the new Corvette: Oh, and the car’s interior remained the only place capable of making a Motel 6 bedroom seem luxurious.

I do disagree with their opinion on the Tribeca's styling though... it has grown on me and I really like its looks now! Anyways, here's what they say about it: While Subaru would like to convince us that “ugly ass” and “dynamic styling” are synonymous, even a pre-teen knows that repulsive is not, and never will be, the new cool.

I'll definitely bookmark that site! Thanks!  :)

Speaking of comparos, I seriously hate the subjective rating system that used in C&D and R&T. C&D's new rating system always seem to flavor the one that the editors "wanted" to win. Its even crazier when they put "incentive/rebate" as one of the criteria of evaluating a car in a comparo. ::) ::) Plus the comments in each car reflects differently in their subjective ratings, also totally different from their first review. They usually love the car in the review than hate it in the comparo.

I used to read that site (The Truth about Cars), however recently I've been turned off by it... no car is perfect, and will never be, just like every other man-made machine

It is not up to ONE man to decide for us that something is good or bad based on whehter he approves of it  or not. Quite frankly, I think those guys on The Truth About Cars are a bunch of loosers trying to carve a reputation about being impartial but in fact are nothing but self-aggrandizing morons.  They have lost credibility in my view because they never look at the good and bad. There are many fine points about the Tribeca.

Canadian Driver tends to sugar coat too much, e.g. there is no mention that the interior dashboard of the new Sonata has nasty pieces of plastic all over it.
