What about front brake lights?
« on: September 14, 2005, 11:58:41 am »
I've read about this idea before and wondered what you all think.

The idea is to put some type of braking indicator on the front of the car. I can see this being a big benefit in city driving when approaching oncoming traffic at intersections. Who hasn't been turning left when the light turns yellow and guy coming toward you has floored it rather than jam on the brakes? It would be very nice to know if the car was braking or not without having to rely on visual judgement of speed.

Being a motorcyclist I'm a little more sensitive to this issue as car drivers regularly turn left accross the path of motorcycles and then claim they didn't see the bike. At least this way, a biker would have a little warning that braking was or was not happening in the oncoming car.

It would sure help if the weather is bad and your judgement of the oncoming car is somewhat lower.

it will be done someday.

like my stage LED tail light idea from 4 years ago, where the tail light has couple of square, the more brake you apply, the more square lights up.
I think MB is going to have it soon.

When will engineering to the lowest common denominator stop. I am all for safety but this is getting beyond common sense and logic.

I’m going to mount a gun turret on my car as a deterrent to bad drivers. Eat lead :censor:.

before adding more lights, they really should make sure that none of the lights are burnt up... I see at least 10 vehicles every day that have 1 or 2 burnt rear brake lights... and when you consider that most of those cars use brake lights as their turn signals, it can get pretty tough to follow them... it should be mandatory to have an indicator in the dash that lights up whenever one of the bulb lights is burnt... and when that indicator is burnt itself, a continual *ding* *ding* *ding* sound should be played so that the driver has no choice but to go and have his lights fixed. I think that this is much more important than the tire pressure checking systems that has been recently mandated...

btw, I too think front brake lights is a stupid idea.

What makes you think that people actually use their mirrors to see what is around them?  :-\

A subwoofer should only be noticed once it has been turned off.

Okay, let's hear the rationale for that one?  ":censor:" is censored, but ":censor:" isn't???

Instead of adding more brake lights, why don't we just teach people to drive?  There's precious little point in all these gadgets when the majority of people are so stupid they can't use a cell phone and drive at the same time.

If I am approaching an intersection intending to go straight through, and there is a car to turn left facing me - I will flash my high beams if I have to drive through on an amber light.  - because what bugs me are those mother :censor: who think as soon as they see an amber light they can turn left immediately without regard to oncomming traffic  :popo:

I usually have the opposite problem. Where if I am turning left and oncoming traffic is coming through on an amber. Which is fine, I always yeild on an amber light. But once that light turns red, I need to get my car out of the intersection. And that's hard to when oncoming traffic is still coming through at a red light. RED means stop. Amber means slow to stop if safe to do so.

Odd.  If I was waiting to turn left on an amber light, and the car coming toward me flashed its lights, I would take that as a sign to go ahead and turn......do you get run into very often when you do this?

I agree with Snack on this issue as front brake lights are only going to distract the eyes of the oncoming drivers and cause more accidents. He is also correct on the rear brake lights being burned out as I also see many of them every day. People should be taught to do a mandatory walk-a-round their vehicle at least once a week. Check the lights and have someone else hit the brake pedal for them as well as only one side of the bulb may be burned out and the running light still works but not the brake light. The more lights the safer we are is my view. It gives me and the other drivers a better chance of saveing ourselves from each other.  :skid:

If I'm coming up to an intersection and the light turns yellow, I try to be sensitive to anyone who's waiting to turn left. Even if I could have made it through on the yellow I'll stop and let them turn so they're not left hanging. I hate the people who charge through the yellow (and sometimes red) while they can clearly see you're committed to turning but have to wait for them.

Agree with tenpenny on the flashing headlights thing. Generally flashing your headlights at someone means "Go ahead".

I guess this opens up a new can of worms:

When making a left turn, I have a habbit of sneaking my nose into the intersection so that I will be able to (legally) make the turn for that light.  Because of traffic and that some lights take a couple minutes to change I sometimes do this even if there are one or two cars in front of me waiting to turn left.  Legally you are allowed to complete your turn if your car is already in the intersection... then again I read that you shouldn't enter an intersection if you cannot clear it by the time the light changes. What do you do?

I wait until the intersection is cleared before entering it... you know... the way everyone should drive...
