Would you buy the same car twice?
« on: September 09, 2005, 11:58:51 am »
I know some here have finished up lease and bought the same car again.  My in-laws bought a new sonata after theirs was done lease.

I have a friend at work that ONLY buys Jetta's, every 3 years he buys a new one.

I could NEVER do it, unless it was a complete redesign, I like spice in my life, something different all the time.

What about you?

Probably not for me, but my Dad loves it.  Starting in 1990 he had 3 Maxima SE's in a row, then finally decided in 2001 that they were getting two big and soft and switched to an A4 1.8T.  He just started on his second A4 1.8T in 2005.

If I can't afford an Acura TL when my lease is up I'll get another Accord sedan.  On the other hand I may just replace my Accord coupe with a spiffy G6 coupe.

Nah, I probably couldn't. Unless there were significant changes or if I thought I found a car that fitted my needs near perfectly.

I could see myself buying a lot of cars within the brand. For instance if I were to buy a Volvo S60.. then 4 years down the road, try an S60... then later try a C70. Sure, I could see myself doing that. But I doubt I could keep buying the Same model over and over again. I have a soft spot for certain car manufacturers, but I always make sure I test drive most of the competition with reletavely little bias first.

I would if I were adding to my collection of Porsches, Ferraris, etc...I'd buy again and again when a new model came out.  But I'm not wealthy so that's only a 'pretend' situation.

As for replacing my daily driver, it'd have to be very good to have me buy one back to back.  If my daily driver was a BMW M3, M5 or the like...I'd seriously consider buying again.  But in today's market, there are too many good cars from different manufacturers to be loyal to only one.

I knew a guy who only drove TL's since they came out.  This last model year was the last for him, he got one of the first TL's in Canada....had an annoying rattle that wasn't fixed....and now is a G35 owner.  I've been happy with the MDX and would consider replacing it with a new one if the re-design is that much better.

If a car is meeting my needs, I drive it until it becomes unreliable. If the model is still the same at that time, I certainly woundn't buy another as it's life is too short or the design is now too dated. I would, however stay with the same model, new version, if I was happy with the old one and nothing better had appeared on the scene. I have little brand loyalty, but I don't need much novelty in my life either.  :)

Depends on my stage of life really.   I am 28 (no kids), odds are my vehicular needs will change over the next 4 years.  Necessitating a change.

My dad who's a salesman and racks up over 50,000 km a year, changes his car every two years.  He's currently on his second nissan pathfinder (not the new model, he thinks they are too big).  If he finds a vehicle he likes, i could easily see him buying it 3 times.

I can see myself in the future buying the same car twice.  Provided I still find the attactions that got me into that car attractive.

Yup, I'd buy another Vibe even if it didn't change.

While I enjoy reading about performance cars and such, I've chosen not to allocate the significant portion of my income to owing a fun or 'cool' car.  Sure, I'd love an S2000 or wrx/sti or whatever but I put my money towards other things and, although I don't want to admit it on this forum  :o I use my car as an appliance... granted a manual shift, semi/sorta sporty appliance but appliance none the less.
For spice I've 4 motorcycles for less than the cost of a Civic which give me vintage, cruising, supersport and dirt.  I can't count how much that would cost to replicate my bikes in four wheeled vehicles!!!

I do, however, live vicariously through those of you with the cool cars!  Keep buying them and writing about them... I need the fix  ;D

I have done that in the past where I was into BMWs seriously in the 70s & early 80s. Several times I traded in one for a new one (2002 on 2002 or 2002 on 530i). Inflation was pretty steep in those days and often the 1 or 2 years old one would bring original price on trade (or only very slightly less). Not today!!

I wouldn't do it anymore, as others have said - too many good choices today (plus less disposable income these days for me!!!).

Fun while it lasted tho... :D

When our Matrix was stolen, we had the opportunity to buy another new one with the insurance settlement.  We looked around first, and decided that because we were two years closer to having kids, we'd get something larger, and better in the snow.  It had nothing to do with being bored with the Matrix - it's still a fantastic vehicle.

Ow never no matter what or how good that would be a major sin -  I love buying cars - when I first learned to drive - I had 17 cars over a 2 year period - mostly old bangers - nothing over 500 pounds - now days I've slow down I like to get a new one every 4 years - with lots and lots of shopping - reading reviews  etc - I feed my addiction of wanted a new car by hiring  new cars and trucks.

Definitely, I wait impatiently for the re-designed Impreza platform. With 95K on the clock and modded to 350 hp my WRX runs like new. I have gained respect for the products Subaru makes and another WRX would suit me just fine. I may jump to an STi so I can have +300 hp with a warranty attached.

I may just keep my WRX to use as my daily driver and look for a nice used roadster for summer. I have officially one year left on my lease and will wait to see what Subaru comes up with.

Yes as long as it serves me well, hence the reason I didn't not get a 2nd Focus.  But would get a 2nd Echo, I will judge the X-Trail in 5 years unless of course it forces me to do it sooner.  63000km with no issues, last gas tank 34.72mpg:)

I had two saabs in succession and would have had a third but they took a price jump
two golf gti in succession but the Golf 4 was delayed and I didn't want a VR6
1 audi and would have had a 2nd except that the A6 3.0 is not available with manual in NA
1 bmw and I wou8ld have another EXCEPT that I'd rather retire early and new BMWs and early retirement dont fit well together
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Seems like you have put so much into your WRX, yet it's a lease.  Does that mean you would have to return it to original condition if you chose to drop the car?

20% chance of buying the same car - not redesigned model
40% chance of buying the same car - redesigned model
40% chance of buying something different
