The Tacoma is highly rated and certainly does not fall into the "lemon" catagory; although, as with any maker, one can sometimes get a bad one. It happens less with Toyota that with some other makers.

Search on Toyota Truck and Tacoma forums on other sites, such as Edmunds.com.

If I were buying a truck it'd be Tacoma/Tundra/RidgeLine/F-Series.

They're pretty darn great!

Thank for the input ovr50.  Its funny you mention those trucks  sirAQUAMAN64 they are on my test drive list.  The only thing I am not liking about the tacoma so far is the Preium fuel they recommend you putting in it.  No way I am going to be doing that with these gas prices bad enough as it is that I am looking into a truck.

I have never let the requirement of premium fuel stop me from buying a certain vehicle. If you can afford the vehicle, you can afford the fuel IMO.  ::)

The premium fuel may be needed only to achieve the advertised hp and torque numbers.  You MAY be able to use regular fuel with a slight reduction in power.

If I was truck shopping, I would also consider the Nissan Frontier.  I actually prefer the looks of the revamped Frontier over the new Tacoma.

These have had some very serious recalls on their transmissions and another recall as of to-day on their power steering systems. As of to-day they are recalling over 978,000 trucks in the US which include most of their truck models for this problem. I personally feel there is better built trucks out there then these. They have had a few problems with them the same as everybody else for that matter.  :)

Toyota voluntarily recalled '89-'98s, over a problem that has not caused a single accident, because the problem can only happen when the vehicle is stopped.

We're hardly talking about an issue like NHTSA forcing Ford to recall incendiary parts.  Besides, what other manufacturer recalls 16-year-old vehicles?

If it's anything like the 4Runner, you'll love driving the Tacoma.  They are fantastic trucks, and if history is any indication, will last a very long time and hold its value better than any similar truck.

I own a 2005 tacoma and the dealer told me that I could use regular fuel, I would just lose around 10 horsepower. Not really that noticable a difference from what I've seen. The truck already has so much power its sick. Toyota HP in trucks always feels way better than another manufacturers. It kind of reminds me of BMWs even when BMW HP specs are lower than other cars it competes against, they still feel faster. I wasn't too impressed with some of the v8 trucks Ive driven, they dont feel too energetic. thats why I got the tacoma..... get one you'll be soooo happy. Like me. they have really good seats too, I have the double cab and even the back seats rock.

The tacoma fuel economy hasn't been too bad so far.... not nearly as good as my jetta tdi :) But its not like I have to fill it up all the time either. latley my jetta has been getting over 1000km to 55 L of gas. freaking amazing I love that car. Toyota should bring some diesel back to N America just for the trucks.

Tacoma would be my first choice for a smaller truck, I can offer that much.  Really, though, I'm just here to say that I love the styling of the F150.  :)

Has lousy BFG Rugged Trail T/A. Why can't a majority of vehicles have decent quality tires? One spends thousands of $$$ on a vehicle and get a set of poor tires. A decent set of tires would add several hundred dollars to the price...not much in the grand scheme of things. ::)

And when you get into high end sports cars, that's the case.  Unfortunately, in the economical car market, people are looking at the bottom line: price.  The salesman at Lot A can explain that his car is more expensive because it has X tires, but for a lot of people that means nothing.  As far as they're concerned, tires are tires, and that's the end of it.

The best option would of course be to offer different tire options, but that's difficult because it means you'd have to order the vehicle.

The 4X4 models look nice but like every other mid-size truck ... the 2X4 looks like the truck is on Tercel frame.  I don't know but the stance of the 2X4 Tacoma doesn't do it for me.  Maybe it's the ride height, the tires ... something is not right.

Even on Toyota.com and Toyota.ca, the only 2X4 picture is the X-runner with the big wheels ... the rest is all 4X4.

Even with the Tundra ... they always beef it up with the TRD suspension and the Quad cab to make it look like a "real" truck.  Toyota didn't go big enough with the Tundra ... Nissan learned from that mistake and got it right though with the Titan.

I know what you mean - the base 4X2 look so awkward and wimpy. The 4X2 PreRunner (4X4 look) is hot tho.

The Tundra Double Cab is one heck of a long truck. Maybe not quite as wide, but the bed height and interior cabin space are very large.
