yeah need more info, like 4 cylinder or 6?

I had a '92 4 cylinder, they had a major problem with the head gasket.  I think the v6 is a fairly reliable engine

Be prepared to get new rotors on a regular basis.  I know of a number of people who own that generation of Grand Am, and the brakes are horrible.  The inlaws' 1998 had a leak that would allow the back seat to get soaked everytime it rained.  Now that's a quality car.   >:(

Run why still can - this car is a total dog - do yourself a favour -  buy a Honda or Toyota you know it make sense - if you must but a GM then stick only with 3.8 - hey you might be lucky - then again you might  not - if it was me I wouldn't touch any GM with a ten foot barage pole - but hey thats me.......

hey here are some more reviews - some people have been lucky - its a gamble one I woundn't want to take.

Over all the V6 is a very decent engine in these cars especially if it is a 3.8. Even the 3.1 is not that bad as long as the anti-freeze changeouts have been done at a proper time frame. Drive the car before you buy it as its your butt that will sit in the drivers seat every day. Some of them did have the brake issue's but not all as the smart folks didn't replace them with the GM rotors the next time.  I have a 96 Corcica here at home with over 300,00klms on it and its runs very well still. Its basically the same car. These cars are not for everybody as the cars that the others here drive as well are not for all of us either. I'd like to see las's 2.7 beat my 3.1. That will be the day.  :) ;D

I personally like the Grand AM.  My Mom had a 97 and a 2000 and they were both great.  No problems etc.  The 4 cylinder was a bit under powered but the 6 had lots of push.  They were fun to drive and were built okay.  I still see quite a few of them on the road today.  Someone did menion the circular air vents and I tend to agree with the fact that they are a pain in the butt.  The back seat was a bit uncomfortable as well.... not enough padding.  The front seats were fine.

You may want to investigate an Accord, Altima/Maxima, Grand Prix, and even... heaven forbid... a taurus.

they (GM) are still using those '70's design power window toggle switches that can be stepped on by a small child or dog and can cause serious injury(the pull-up/push-down design the imports have been using for years are totally safe, in comparison).

You think that's bad.... I had my cat in the back seat of my Accord and he figured out how to open the power window.  At first I thought he may have stepped on it and coincidentally it opened but he kept opening it.  I ended up having to put the window lock switch on.  Little bugger....

Weird, I acutally kind of liked the circular air vents. One less step, though maybe a bit less versatile overall. Of course I never actually bother adjusting those things.

As for power, well, my 2001 Grand Am would struggle to keep speed up a slight incline with 3 people in it. 4 cyl slushbox with dead AC and a misfiring #3 cylinder though. :)

A '95 Grand Am was a poor car in 2005 when this thread was started and is an even poorer car now two years later.

Thanks for exhuming this corpse artie.

If you're gonna post-whore, try to pick threads that are a little more recent.

Don't blame artie.  He was only trying to drive his post count into double digits before spamming the board with his crappy zmax testimonial.

I have a 1996 Corsica here at home which my one son drives. We have had this car for almost 6 years now and it has the 3.1 engine in it. This car has been very reliable even down to the brake rotors as they are virtually the same car as the the Pontiac Grand-Am. I put aftermarket rotors on the 1st time and have never touched them since but have done the front brake pads twice since. Young kids to-day drive alot in town and he wears them out with his excessive milage he drives.  Even the air still works perfectly and I have yet to ever add any freon in to it ever. The body is virtually as new on this car as well and so is the interior altho the boy wants to sell it now as his 2 little girls are starting to get big and he needs a larger car for all the stuff most young couples carry with them for the kids. Thats around the asking price we are going to ask as well and thats e-tested as well as safetied.  Somebody will get a good running car from us here soon. :)
