help with polish and wax!
« on: September 02, 2005, 11:23:37 pm »
Hopefully someone can help me this friday evening or tomorrow morning. I've never polished or waxed before.

I bought the following:

8" random rotary polisher/waxer with 2 polishing sleeves, 1 wax applicator and 1 wax remover
Turtlewax black polish liquid (hey my car is black and it has a nick eraser that might be handy)
Turtlewax premium ultrashine wax
blue super shammy thingy for drying, feels very nice (simoniz)

I also have tire cleaner and a microtec towel for cleaning and drying.

please critique my plan and offer suggestions:

1. wash car and use brush to get all bugs completely off front end
2. dry car with shammy (rotating the towel to keep using clean parts)
2b. Go to my parents garage so that I am out of sunlight
3. small amount of liquid polish on polisher (1 capful?) use machine to do a few square feet
4. apply more and repeat so the whole car is polished.
5. remove cotton applicator and swithc to the next one for buffing.

then have lunch

6. wax applicator, small amount in middle, do whole car slowly
7. wax will dry and turn grey, switch to remover
8. lightly buff the whole car.
9. use towl to clean wheels etc.
10. apply tire cleaner

11. drive super clean nice black jetta with deep shine.

I also have a polisher and have been doing this for many years, Your plan sounds very good with the exception of useing a different wax cloth to apply from the one to remove if I have read your plan correctly. You will catch on very quick on how to do slightly larger areas faster as you go. The secret to useing a Polisher is to Never Stop and just work on one Spot as you will Burn the paint right off of the Car. Always keep the machine moving.  I am sure your plan will succeed and you will end up with a very nice job. Just take your time.   :)

hmm? the polisher came with a wax applicator and a wax remover... is it best to just stick with the applicator and just go from applying to buffing?

thanks, I think the step I am going to improve is the pre-wash. Probably wash it down at a wand washer joint, then go home and hand wash and hand dry.

I'll let you know how it works out!

update:

A long day of work and the car looks good. More importantly, never screwed anything up or dragged a grain of sand all over the hood.

The photos don't do it justice since they are so compressed. Also, check the photoshop job on the license plate!

edit: to add pictures, also, yes I saw the bit of wax left on the trim in the bottom photo (wiping away the wax is a big job!)

It looks great!  Now in between waxings you can use Mecguiars quick detailer to keep that shine!
