Buying New 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse!!
« on: September 02, 2005, 07:46:36 pm »
Hey everybody, I'm new here, I've been lurking around this board since lastnight lol and I've learnt some really interesting stuff!! I was wondering if someone can help me!

Well, my boyfriend and I are going to be buying a new eclipse soon, trading in our 1999 Civic DX that we bought used last december! I was just wondering if there are any tips on buying the new car? My boyfriend's younger brother just bought an eclipse last month, and well he didn't bargain with the sales guy or anything (duh! he's a totally different story.. lol) well I, on the other hand, refuse to buy anything at retail price!!!!! We're planning on going to the same guy that sold the car to the brother, because he is sort of a friend of a friend and he didn't seem to put unneccesary fees and such and he seemed pretty honest, and seeing that this will be the second car we've bought from him in a month, we will ask for a little discount and try to bargain with him a bit. I'm not gonna let my bf get the car unless we get AT LEAST $1000 off. Does anyone know the (i think it's called) Invoice price of the car (I read all the tips on http://www.carbuyingtips.com/)? just a ball park. I'm guessing probably about $2000 under the MSRP. Also, our Civic is about 162km!!! We bought it with a high milage so I'm guessing we won't get much for it... we're hoping at least $6000. Sorry for the long post!!! Thanks in advance for any help!!!!!

it's a '99 civic DX. I have heard that they have one of the best resale values, but the car is about 162km. We just bought it last december used, so a majority of those kms weren't used up by us!

Hatch or Coupe and is it automatic with working AC?

In automatic without air in a coupe the wholesale is 3K.  Dealer might give you 4K on paper but will just give you 1k less of a discount on the Eclipse.

You must keep in mind that your Civic to be resold in the market will need an e-test, safety and quite a few things replaced.

Personally, I think the apa.ca $(25.00 cost) print out of suggested selling price is the way to go vis-a-vis negotiating with a new car dealer.

it;s a coupe with working a/c and it's automatic! above you said we might get 3000 without air, how much do you think we'll get with air?

If you sell privately you can probably get ~$8000 for it.  I saw some '97 DXs in today's paper asking that much or more (one was asking $9500, on a lot mind).

But then you pay PST and GST on the purchase of the new car, instead of just GST.

Lastly, ENJOY the Eclipse.  *wants one*

$8000 sounds really good! We owe a little more than that on the civic cuz we financed it.I have a question though, since we're currently financing it, is it possible to put it up on autotrader or something like that and see what kind of offers we get for it? is it worth paying to post it up?

$500.00 more

If the car is absolutely mint they might give you $4000.  In the Toronto Auto Trader similar PRIVATE sale Civics are asking high 5k.  Those are certified and e-tested and usually they sell for $500. less than asking.

Why are you selling?  Is the car wearing out?

I don't know what AT costs, but it's probably worthwhile, yes.  GTA is a big place to sell a car, there's bound to be someone who wants a Civic DX.  With A/C it'll probably go easily, too.

And yes, you can list and sell it.  You pay off the rest of the owed money as a lump sum (not sure if that's what you were asking?).

Steve: I would hazzard a guess, because the Eclipse is a bloody awesome car.  :D

Hey guys, well, we're selling it cuz I guess we can't afford to finance both cars at the same time, otherwise, I'd keep the civic as a winter beater with some better tires or something lol. Well, if we sell the car for lets just say, about 4000, we still owe a few thousand on the car. So I really don't know if it's worth it... but we can't afford the 2 cars at the same time

hi, trades in are a bad idea, you'll lose money, at least 2 grand.
why?
first, you can't bargin , at the same time, the new and the trade in car.
you can have car cost canada for the invoice price, but then when you trade in, it complicated things. the sales will now have 2 number to play around with, the trade in price and the new car price.
to you it maybe only 1 number , the number that you'll need to pay.
if you are not hurry, why not private sale?

another thing is...you sell your civic, and buy an eclipse with your bf.
I have seen this story, not that I am saying you and your BF. but fact is...bf can break up easily. and if you have a share wealth, it is going to get into trouble later on.

Hi Meredith.  I was just wondering what car you had before the black Civic?

It's interesting to see the progression.

Hey guys, well, the civic is his first car!!! lol. I'm not sure why exactly he wants a new one, I guess he just wants something to show his hard work!!! The civic is actually his and it's his car he's trading in, and he'll be paying for the eclipse too. I'm just researching because... well I like to do my research first! I like it because I feel I've accomplished something if I get all the info together and get the best deal! hee hee... I guess it's just something I personally like to do. :)

I'm not sure why exactly he wants a new one.

I do, and its perfectly normal. :skid:  You are very wise to stay out of his space regarding his desire to get out of his beater regardless of any financial implications.

If you drive his new car make sure you are listed on his policy as a "named driver" unless you own your on car and live apart.

Your line on top reminded me of the new Home Show company that has these ultra-annoying ads on the radio "Why pay retail?" "I wouldn't pay retail" "You gotta be crazy to pay retail".  :banghead: I never thought I'd say this, but Sleep Country Canada's ads are less of an irritant!

Anywho, welcome to the forum Meredith.

The new Eclipse is a killer car! Looks spectacular.
Have you at all considered holding out for the new upcoming Civic Si tho? Lower price, lively performance (believe it or not), and better fuel economy. It'll be a pretty nice and sporty package.

Just curious.

Personally, I would always wait for 2nd year or older models to ensure that all the initial bugs and defects are ironed out before getting any vehicle, domestic or import.

Yeah, I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but the brand-spankin' new Eclipse would worry me a bit too.  I really like the looks and having a big-ass V6 in it means tons of torquey power, but I'm still a little leary about Mitsu being around in Canada for many more years... and their reliability isn't on par with some of the other Japanese makers out there.

What has led your B/f to choose the Eclipse?  What other cars did he consider?  Still are some amazing rates on the RSX out there right now which is a reliable, efficient and fairly practical little car -- very refined for this class too.

Great... now I can see and hear Christine Magee saying that right now. Thanks. Thanks a lot  :-[

I'm worried about Mitsu's fortunes and wouldn't buy one myself, but I do think they look spectacular.

RSX and others still look like the best alternatives, but can't say they measure up to the Eclipse's look. And the RX-8 has some issues of it's own (inconsistent fuel economy and oil consumption).

Sports cars are often bought on looks alone, so...

Agreed, they are in a precarious financial situation. On many of there models you can basically name your price. Mitsu and their sales people simply want move them.

Dave

With any luck, Mitsu realizes how much is riding on this car and has ironed out all the bugs and kinks before production. (I know this statement isn't 100% because I caught wind of a problem with the brakes on quite a few thousand cars).
