Burks FAlls, Ontario

Gas prices have hit an all time high here this morning, $1.80 per litre for regular unleaded!

With a 50-litre gas tank, my 2003 Ford Focus, yes folks a Ford Focus, will cost me $90.00 to fill up!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know where Burks Falls is but after checking Google Maps, I'm surprised that it's closer than I thought.  Somewhere South of the Trans Canda Hwy, along Hwy 11.  Initially I thought that maybe this place is so far that freight is a huge chunk of the price of gas there... not so it seems

I have a cousin in Burke's Falls.  I go there every year.  Only three hours or so from Toronto.

Personally, I don't care how much it costs to fill a tank - only how much it costs to drive a set distance.  By adjusting my speed to a max of 110 on the 400 series higways, I know my EL will do 6.0L/100km.  The X-Trail is now getting 8.8L/100km.

I drive 1000km every week for commuting and work.  The EL replaced a coupe that burned over 10L/100km.  That 40L difference, at $1.25 per L, is saving me $50 a week.

How long before we see Expeditions and Suburbans abandoned at the side of the road?  I gotta think used car values for gas guzzlers are gonna plummet.  And good luck to anyone trying to buy the new Civic for the first few months - that thing is going to be even hotter now.

My brother in Manitouwadge is paying $2.00/l. He drives 140 kms per day to work at the mines at Hemlo in his F-150.

Even if he's got the most fuel-efficient F-150, he'll be paying at least $30.27 a day for gas, or $908 per month.  Probably more than $1000 per month if he does any driving outside of just getting to work.  Sobering.

He was still paying about half of that last week.  Unless the pickup is needed on the job, it's not sobering, it's foolish.

Now if you could have got the diesel...  from a UK car magaiine

Under the bonnet of the D-4D is a 1.4-litre 75bhp engine, already used successfully in bigger cubic capacities on the Corolla, Avensis, RAV 4 and Land Cruiser. It’s a compact-cylinder unit capable of high performance, low fuel consumption and minimal environmental impact.

The new Yaris offers all the advantages of the latest direct-injection common rail diesel technology with an average consumption of 4.2 litres/100 km. This means that as well as the obvious economic and environmental advantages, the Yaris has a huge range.

The 1.4 D-4D power plant is available both for the three and five-door Yaris and for the Verso model.

Performance is virtually the same as that of the 1.3 VVT.i petrol versions. The Toyota D-4D has a top speed of 170 km/h and accelerates to 60mph in 12,6 seconds, while the Yaris Verso D-4D has a top speed of 160 km/h and accelerates from 0-60mph in 13.9 seconds.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I confess... I have begun to envy Echo drivers :)  I've always had a soft spot for hatchbacks though.

The other nice thing about the Echo is that it has a timing chain, rather than a timing belt like the Corolla and Civic.  That alone may save $600-900 over the life of the vehicle.

Actually, my driving would not suit itself to diesel use. Most of my drives are less than 8 kilometres, so the engine would rarely get hot - something that diesels like a lot. BTW, I too have always liked small wagans and hatches - going all the way back to the '60s. And yes, the timing chain is a positive!  ;D

We're getting ripped off bigtime by the oil companies. The provincial and federal governments won't do anything about it since they collect all those tax dollars off every liter we pump.

FYI, Exxon/Mobil had a $ 7.1 billion profit in the last quarter, and that's in U.S. greenbacks. Esso(Imperial Oil) is part of the Exxon chain.

Well, gas was $1.05 a litre( for regular) in Chilliwack, B.C. today.  $2.00 a litre is hard to take.
Maybe I should disconnect four of the eight spark plugs in my Monster Miata ;D
