MPG or L/100Km for the 2006 Toyota Yaris and the 2006 Kia Rio?
« on: September 01, 2005, 10:07:57 pm »
With Gas Prices as high as they are, I am debating trading down to a small commuter car...  What sort of milage will these two all-new models get?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum JD, did you see the 50L challenge?

http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/pw/50-litre.htm

I would expect the Toyota with it's more refined engine to get better fuel economy than the Kia Rio, but the Kia will be less expensive to buy at first, but have a larger depreciation.

The Yaris driven normally, (110km/h highway), will probably get you an average of 5L/100km

The current echo is rated at: 6.7/5.2 (44/54) city/highway

Considering during our 50L challenge we got better than that with a corolla I would guess the echo might get slightly better.

But you can step down to a compact (corolla / civic) without losing much in fuel economy compared to the subcompacts.

Thanks, the boards have been up for 3 or maybe 4 years with that old style, so it's a BIG change for some regulars  ;D

I would suspect the pricing to be similar to the current Echo Hatch, Avtoller just bought one, he should know pricing.  The Civic SI might not get the best of fuel mileage being 197hp though ;)

I like the design very much - It is mildliy dated but not heavly so -  bear in mind its the first year of production in nth america - so you almost be the test pilot

My guess is that the pricing will be slightly higher than current, but packages and standard equipment has been juggled, so it's hard to say for certain. I did order mine as Wing said, but the pricing is still not out. It is the car I want, so I'm not to worried about the exact cost.

From everything I've read, the Kia Rio is a pretty awful car, with poor drive characteristics and at best, doubtful reliability. I would think VERY carefully before buying one. The initial purchase price is low, but as Consumer Reports said about the Rio: "The Rio is one of the lowest-priced cars sold in the U.S. Expect to get what you pay for. It's based on the dreadful Ford Aspire, ..."  ::) Of course, they were talking about the 2005.

Thanks!

When I was in Italy last June, I was leafing through an Italian car magazine. It had an article with the top 10, 20 (can't remember) most efficient cars.

At the top were the 1.2 and 1.4 liter diesels running on 3.0 liters/100 kms...hardly a need for the complexity of a hybrid.

BTW, the Toyota Yaris is already being sold there.

I'd sooner go for a Golf TDI. More substantial, not a shoe box and still manages about 4.5 liters/100 km.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Welcome to the forum JD, did you see the 50L challenge?

Gains haven't been great considering over 20 years have passed.

When I owned a 1983 Toyota 2 door Corolla (1600 cc with 5 speed manual), I consistently got between 51 and 53 MPG on the highway at 105 km/hr. Remember, this was a boxy car with a carburettor. So much for aerodynamics and fuel infection when it comes to efficiencies.

I also noticed that more than the NRCan numbers were obtained during that challenge...same for both city and highways numbers for my old Corolla.

This is only sort of true. The Yaris you saw is the old model - available for 6 years, very similar to our Echo HB. The 2006 Yaris will be unvieled in Europe later this month, in Canada in October, and the US in spring. The new model is slightly larger, more substantial, and "upscale" than the old one.

;D Bite the Bullet!! Bite the Bullet!!  ;D

For a small commuter car, the Yaris is top of my list. Minimal ownership costs, holds it's value well, as good as it gets on gas, and stylish!  ;)

I'd look at the Golf TDI too if you don't mind the dated style. Although it is pretty pricey, you get more room and goodies.

AVToller, is Toyota going to do the right thing and offer side bags on the 2006 Yaris/Echo?

Better still, are they going to offer them in a diesel like so many of their overseas models?

This continent has to get with the times and start cleaning up their diesel.

I have no idea, although I suspect not. I certainly have no desire to have them. As for a diesel option, not for now.

I understand the driveline options in Europe for the Yaris include a terrific 1.3L diesel that gets incredible economy and has tons of torque compared to the larger gasoline engines.

Bring it here and I'll consider one.  Anything "real" (unlike the Smart) that can break into the 3.X L/100km range and I will be highly interested.
No place I'd rather be...
