It would be helpful if you gave us a little more information i.e. what price range are you looking at, what dealers you have in your area of the country etc.  There are many all wheel drive options out there from entry level to luxury models.  :)

I have AWD now, a BMW 330xi with 38% torque to front and 62% to rear. last car was an A4 quattro 1.0 with a chip, which iwas a Torsen centre differential.

I am quite convinced that:
spreading the traction over all 4 tires is worth the money in any sort of slippery conditions.
I prefer the fixed torque split approach to the variable Audi approach.

Having said that.  I have not driven one of the new BMWs with the computer controlled torque distribution nor have I driven any car with that.   Probably it is better than either system I have driven

The TT is a bad place to start as it is a FWD car until the wheels slip and sends traction to the rear (Haldex).  Also, just generally not a great handling sports car.

I've driven Subaru manuals (auto have a different system), Audi quattro, Audi and Volvo Haldex, and BMW's (now old) fixed split system.  Fixed is nice and predictable, but I prefer the moving advantages of the Scoobie or Audi system.  Between those two its arguing about tried-and-true mechanical vs electronic high-tech.  In my mind they produce roughly the same result.  Haldex has issues as above (unless it is a 993 or later Carrera 4 in which case the Haldex is essentially reversed with it being RWD and power being able to move to the front).  My beef with the e46 AWD cars was the jacked up ride height and the fact that the sport package was seats and wheels, not suspension as well.  That's why we bought our A4 1.8T Avant and not a 325XiT.

As for AWD or not, I like the security and traction, but it takes away a bit of the fun of RWD, and adds substatial weight and gas penalties.  Up to you.  I would like to always have at least 1 of the 2 or 3 family cars be AWD.
