You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Used Vehicle Review:
1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero
2001 Oldsmobile AleroOldsmobile Aleros are equipped with either four- or six-cylinder engines, but "the V6 suffers from chronic intake manifold gasket failures," and Aleros "suffer from short-lived brake rotors," reports Chris Chase. However, "it's a stylish, spacious and pseduo-sporty car," he says, and "low resale values mean that a well maintained Alero is a terrific used-car deal."    More...

Uh, sure. I've heard that SOMETIMES other car brands have problems too....I hope they cancel ALL of them. Then all that would be left would be......uh......your bicycle. Although that would solve the current gas issues.

From the article: "Consumer Reports notes these issues in its evaluation of the Alero and while it recommends against buying a 1999 through 2001 model largely because of the above noted issues, it does recommend cars from the 2003 model year."

We have a 2002. Is it or is it not recommended? Not that I care because other than the noted rotor issues it's been a more dependable car after three years than my 8 month old Mazda. I hope Mazda gets shut down. ::)

I personally think that Kitty Cat is cheap and expects top quality for paying next to nothing.

City_pig, the 2002 model got an average rating. Consumer Reports gives their ratings based on the number of problems reported compared to the age of the car. Therefore the problems that crop up as the kilometres add up will be more prevalent in older models. Honestly, the only things to look out for in my opinion are the rotor and gasket problems. Keep an eye on the coolant level if you have a V6 model. If it starts to drop, get it checked out stat.
Buy this car to drive to work; Drive to work to pay for this car.

what be left your ask.....A decent car industy - if any car manufactor disapeared - there never endding supply of car manufactors that would take up the slack

Of Course doesn't evey one - the only snag is that the real world is not like that - the amount of money these things cost they shouldn't be any problems  - it can be the biggest expense  of your hole entire life and its a dud - imagin if you got a shoddy  medical implant.....you wouldn't stand for it - yet your telling me you would stand up for a shody car

No-body is building a perfect car yet. Overall the Oldsmobile product lineup was a very good product. It had a few problems near the end but nothing that would put it in the most undesirable purchase catagory. As stated above by a owner of 3 years his has been a very good car compared to his other brand which he has only had for 8 months. Even your Buick has a lot of life left in it.  Many cars are only as good as the owners treatment of them as well.

If companies which produce unreliable cars should go out of business, maybe nations like Germany, France, Italy and UK should cease their auto industry while leaving Japan as the world's sole auto provider. Honestly, even Japanese cars have issues. Its not the first time I heard Nissan/Infiniti owners have quality problems similar to Mercedes.
