How much gasoline is derived from oil?
« on: August 30, 2005, 03:17:51 pm »
Does anyone know how much gasoline can be drived from a barrel of crude oil?  I know that a lot of other chemicals come from crude distillation.... Kerosene, dry cleaning fuel.... to name a few.

The info is off the web, so I don't know how reliable it is.  But here is what they said "One barrel of crude oil makes about 19½ gallons of gasoline, 9 gallons of fuel oil, 4 gallons of jet fuel, and 11 gallons of other products, including lubricants, kerosene, asphalt, and petrochemical feedstocks to make plastics."  So that should be about 70+ L of gasoline from 1 barrel of crude oil.

These days, there's usually about $70 worth in a barrel.

It can change.  Depending on the desired product, refineries can modify the processes to produce greater quantities of distillates (heating oil, diesel etc.) or greater quantities of the lighter products like gas depending on demand.  Generally they'll swap over after the summer driving season to start stocking up on heating oil for the winter.
