Well Saf, I consider myself the opposite of a luddite (I invest in young startup tech companies for a living - I tend to lose money on stuff the rest of the world isn't ready for). Diesel emission are simple to control, but they haven't been implemented yet. Gas emissions and economy is simple to control (further) but they haven't yet either. This is not about science, but consumer buying patterns and politics.
I absolutely agree there is no one solution, if you look at my post I point out the issues with hybrids that I believe are worth focusing on (and the issues with diesels that people usually conveniently forget).
If anything, I was acusing Mr. Meow of being a luddite (and the usual fear-mongering about hybrids). If we are worried about those bats, we better start banning cell phones - those bats are much worse for the environment (Li+) and are far more plentiful. I believe 500M new cell phones per year is the current uptake. (I will get an exact source and figure if anyone cares)
As for the article, I mostly agree. I'm for encouraging hybrids, but clogging HOT/HOV lanes with single passenger hybrids is bad. Two folks in a TDI is a much better use of fuel than just me in a Prius. I'm all for bonus based on weight (I'm the big fan of light cars - Miatas remember!).
Personally, I want a diesel hybrid. It'll be a torque monster ...
