Seems to me that as police radar technology advances, the detector would end up being obsolete. Generally how long does a detector last people anyway??

Depends how much you speed I guess. I've gotten one speeding ticket in 5 years (first year of driving when I didn't know where the traps were) so I don't think I would be a good candidate to buy one.

City, I've placed my 5'er too.  Nicely said.

MDX doesn't have to lie, he drives a big, heavy SUV... if he drives over the speed limit and tries to take a gentle curve it'll roll.  :-)

City is right on....in provinces where these detectors are illegal.  In Alberta, it means jack to have a detector.

MDX isn't pulling anyone's leg, it's just a different definition of "I just don't speed."

For some people, that would mean not driving over the speed limit.  However, to quote MDX: "Am I over the posted limit. Yes, if the flow of traffic is also going over the limit."
As my teacher back in high school would say, compare and contrast with "I just don't speed".

I'll remember that the next time I get pulled over.

"But officer I wasn't speeding!"
"You were doing 120 in a 90."
"But, I just don't speed, I was only over the speed limit!"
"Sir, please step out of the car!"

To me, the definition of a speeder (or speeding)is somebody who is exceeding the posted limit AND outpacing the flow of traffic.  That causes a dangerous situation where the increased rate of speed can surprise other drivers.  Same with people going significantly under the posted speed limit and flow of traffic...the element of surprise can cause problems.  I prefer to keep pace (provided I am comfortable with it) rather than live by the book.  Case in point, if it's dead of winter and the roads are slick, flow of traffic is going 50kph in a 70kph zone.  Buddy going 70kph is passing other cars by 20kph.  Is he speeding?  I say he is.

So in the grand scheme of things, going by conventional definition of speeding, I do speed becuase I do exceed the posted speed limit....if the flow is also above the posted limit.  However, I don't think I cause a dangerous situation if I flow with the traffic speed.  So if we want to sit here and split hairs and determine what everybody's definition of speeding is...go on ahead, I know what mine is and if some people want to call it 'pulling ones leg' or say I have posted 'contrasting' statements....

Easy there MDX, you should know by now that I'm pulling YOUR leg even without my smiley!!!

There's nothing wrong with going with the flow of traffic. I also feel it's much safer. But if the flow of traffic is going above the limit don't be the guy at the front or you're getting the chunk!

Oh yeah, and I get to take your detector if I find it.

It's all good City...just throwing out my view of what a speeder is.  It won't be accepted by all and that's fine.  When I say "I don't speed": I use my definition of what I consider speeding.  It differs from what the book says but I stand by my view.  If I keep with the flow, I'm good...provided I'm midpack (always do tuck myself in nicely between cars) and ensure I'm not trying to be a hero.

Well said, City_P.  Five from me (first post).    Can detectors be confiscated in provinces where they are legal?

I have a detector that I bought about 15 years ago.  I haven't used it in at least 10 years, not because it became obsolete (which it most certainly is now), but because too much of my focus was drawn to it.  Besides I was never driving insanely fast for extended periods of time.  Usually within or near limit tolerances with occasional blasts up to Stupidtown.  Not worth the detector PITA factor.  And, quite frankly, I  found it a bit embarassing to look like such a flagrant scoff-law, as hypocritical as that sounds.  If I get pulled over, so be it, I'll take my lumps.

So Ovr, I guess I go nekked into the woods now too. I hope I don't bump into you.

City_P, I dig the new sig.

I am one for two on the use of detectors.  Always use your hand brake.  My last one became obsolete so I just let it go, but a new Valantine would be great up here in the hinterland particularily at night where the speed limit is a whopping 49.7 miles per hour.  What a friggin joke.  Try driving 100 miles @ 49.7 mph on a straight road in the middle of nowhere on a nice clear day.  Not only is it absurd that a government can get away with this BS but that kind of speed limit causes a lot of dangerous passing.
