To James' point, the key is the intelligence of the traction control.  The new ones don't just kill the throttle (like the ASC on my 97 bimmer).  The instructors for my program were certainly for the nannies, although they did favour the M3 competition pkg which has them muted.  Like everything else, its all in the subtleties of the implementation.

The other thing they point out about these nannies, and ABS as well, only the true top tier can beat the devices, and no one on this board is in that category (unless they'd like to show my their professional racing CV).

David, that is for sure.

That's the funny thing, if I had VSA or DSC or whatever the heck they want to call it, I would probably run a few runs at auto-x with it on and then a few with it off.  To try it.  Most people just turn it off.

A lot of the systems do kill power though, some just kill power completely which stops any type of wheel spin, resulting in slower time in any type of competition.  Not that wheel spin is good, but if the driver notices it he lets off the throttle a bit, if the computer does (in some of the applications) it kill the engine and it takes another 1-2 seconds before power is regained.

As long as the system is not as instrusive as ones in Mercedes and Chrysler, I don't think its necessary to turn it off. Even in Mercedes, it goes back on after you turned it off.

Some systems you have to restart the car to have the computer pick up the settings.  Our BMW training cars required restarting to turn the nannies back on.
