Matrix or civic?
« on: August 27, 2005, 08:26:36 pm »
I am trying to decide between a 05 matrix and 05 civic SE.  Both have similar features (auto, A/C, CD).  The matrix is used and has high km (30 k), but I won't be putting a lot of mileage on it, so even if I sell it in a few years both will be compareable in terms of mileage.  I can also buy an extended warranty ($900 for another 2 years and extra powertrain) to make up for the "lost" 12 months of coverage.  The total price for the cars (including taxes, levies, docing fees) are $22.4k for the civic and $21.6k for the matrix.  The history on the matrix is fine-no accidents, regular servicing.

I was hoping to get your opinions on which you think is the better deal.

The Civic is brand new?  Coupe or Sedan?

Both are great cars, realiable and fuel efficient, and all that.  So it really comes down to what you need, I think.  Do you need the verstatility and size of the hatchback?

I think the best thing to do would be consider your needs, and then drive both.  Whichever one you like better, take.

I can't even tell you what I would want - I'd have to drive them both.

The civic is a brand new sedan.
I've driven both and they seem the same to me. Both have everything that I need (and then some). The extra cargo space for the matrix would be useful, but is more of an extra than a necessity.

I think this sort of decision comes down to how much space you want, and how much you need.  Both are very sensible.  We certainly enjoyed our Matrix.

If you like them both, and don't think you'll use the extra space of the Matrix, I would be tempted by the Civic.  There's a certain sense of security in a brand new vehicle...

That said, I also love the styling of the Matrix, and would be happy with either if I was looking at them.

The newness of the Civic is a plus.  The space for the matrix will be useful for a couple of things, but not on a regular basis.  Other than the high mileage, the only thing I don't like about the matrix is the colour (white), but after looking at it a few times, I am getting accustomed to it. The plus is I think the resale for the matrix might be higher as there don't seem to be as many of them as the civics.

I need to check into insurance for the matrix. I asked about the civic and corolla (another car I considered) which where almost the same. I am assuming the rate will be similar to that of the corolla.  I also need to ask if there is a horizontal screen that can go in the back to 'hide' anything in the trunk.

I think that the Matrix will be slightly lower than the Corolla for insurance because it's a hatchback. White seems to be a very popular colour these days, and in Calgary at least, and I see tons of Matrix's driving around.

Because of the fact that it's new, I'd have to give the Civic the edge. You will probably get a good deal too for an 05' model.

Even though I own 2 Hondas I think the Matrix is way better looking than the Civic.  Both are good cars and I'm sure you will get much enjoyment from either.

I bought the matrix.  It was a really tough choice.  The insurance was almost the same (within $20).  I managed to get another $200 off the matrix (total of $1300 off the asking price) and I could only get a total of $200 off the MSRP for the civic even though they still had five of the '05 SE in stock.  The matrix is a base FWD with the northern package (block heater and undercoating), B package and new tires, so I figured $21.3k (incl. both taxes) was a good price.  A brand new matrix with the same options is about $26k, not including the new all season tires.
I am getting use to the white colour. I have seen a few other matixes around, but so far no white ones.  I've already gone out and bought a cargo net for it and a piece of carpet for the cargo space.  I didn't think I'd be this excited about getting a car.  Who knew?

It really is a nice car, and you can put a lot more than you'd think in the cargo area.

Enjoy it, and...pics!

I hope you really enjoy it, Mollie. It is an excellent car, and if I had needed a bit more room, I would have chosen it rather than the 2006 Echo HB I'll be getting. It should serve you well for many, many years.

Should we hold you to that?

Here's a photo of my new matrix.  You might want to put sunglasses on, the white is blinding.

That's good old Alpine white - there are a few in Port Alberni. It looks good when clean.

Don't worry - let it get dirty enough and you can tell people it's a custom colour.  Backforest Brown Flake...

I love the white on this car. Very sharp indeed. Enjoy the new ride! Hey, you might lose it in a snow storm, but you'll definitely find it at night!!
