Gas Prices - Any effects?

Attention Dealers - er Neil and Hondasalesguy.

I wonder the percentage of sales that each of you have been experiencing, by your different products, lately and could share with us.

Have the higher gas prices made an effect? If you could break out the % of each type of vehicles sold and say compare it with four or five months ago.

Actual numbers are not needed and that might be confidential but it could be interesting to see if there are any trends going on that you can talk about.

At Honda are the Pilot sales dropping while CRV sales might be climbing etc? And over at Hyundai maybe Tuscon sales are taking off while Sante Fe's are coming down.

Curious.

According to one report I saw, the Tuscon is doing so well, they fear that it might actually be eating into Santa Fe's sales.  Whether you can attribute that to gas prices as a primary cause I'm not so sure.  The car itself is new and new cars always attract attention.  It seems to have hit a chord with buyers.

With renewed focus on fuel efficient vehicles the less on the high margined SUV’s and trucks I wonder if some of the manufactures will creep up prices to compensate. There is not much profit in the smaller cars unless you sell lots of them. This will defiantly hurt the big three the most.

Time to worry about oil? It has hit $70 today with the concern over one hurricane.

My neighbour took her Echo in for it's first oil change yesterday and ran into her salesperson.  She told her she bought her car in the "nick of time" as the Echo HB is selling like mad.  Here in gas-guzzlin' Alberta!  Wow!

Maybe Katrina will wreck the oil productive capacity of the Gulf of Mexico enough to have gas at $1.50 a litre?  I guess it's getting close to $1.20 in some parts of Canada.  Maybe $1.50 a litre will finally kill the sales of those resource sucking pigs?  Here's hoping...
No place I'd rather be...

I wonder when we start to hear talk on how the price of fuel will affect the current HP wars in performance cars. Maybe the high HP rwd platforms are not a good thing to market right now.

I couldn't hope more!  There's going to be mass graveyards of SUV's! :-)

I don't think the sales of high fuel consuming performance cars would be hurt all that much. I mean those in the market for these cars could probably care less anyway. Us "lowly peons" out there though, will probably buy more civics and corollas, which IMO is a good thing.

The less there are of stupid SUV drivers out there, who think they're indestructable and therefore drive like dumbasses (talking on their cell phones no less), the better.

Let's not go overboard here, folks, there are as many stupid car drivers as "SUV drivers" out there so don't let your hatred of SUVs color your comments on drivers who act foolishly. I have seen far more small car drivers driving stupidly (tailgating, excess speed, unsafe lane changes) around here than SUV drivers doing those things. Most SUVs are not driven by inexperienced kids, which is part of that equation.

It's unfair and inaccurate to label a type of vehicle owner as being "stupid" IMO.

It just makes me angry that some large car owners seem to drive with complete disregard for safety (and/or lack of attention) because they feel impervious. Your point on inexperienced small car drivers are definitely true Ovr. "Stupid" drivers in general make me angry. I take back my previous comment, as I did not mean to label ALL suv owners. The last 5 vehicles we have owned were SUV's and we have two in the garage.

This weekend, I have had bitter experiences with these "bad" SUV drivers, so my opinion is a little biased.

If I am soooo stupid…how is it that I can be a sole proprietor and afford to drive the vehicles I chose to. I can afford to have an Escalade but I chose to drive a Highlander. Does this make me stupid?

Is it me? It’s just not getting any smarter in here these days. From hair-balls ODing on cat nip to this. WTF?

I was talking to a couple of car sales reps over the weekend. It seems that they've both noticed (independently) more people downsizing from minivans. Typically Ma and Pa Emptynest, deciding that they really could do without the van, and trading for Civics and Corollas. So far they haven't noticed any uptick in people trading in pickups or SUVs.

True Ovr, very true.

In fact, while the "unobservant soccer mom" chatting on her cell phone while driving her Escalade is indeed a favourite punching bag for many, I have become aware of several different profiles.  And no, they don't all drive hulking, gas guzzling SUVs.

If I see a baseball cap poking up above the driver's head rest I watch that car very carefully.  Young guys (and gals) zooming around in their very first and very fast little cars doing wild lane changes certainly raise my tension level.

On the other hand, I know quite a few young drivers who are very responsible behind the wheel.  They even put some of us baby boomers to shame!

Then there is the "busy deal maker", driving a fancy car and, yes again, on his cell phone putting together the next "big deal".  Gotta move that merchandise!

There are others, no doubt, but the above should illustrate that singling out one car type and its "typical" driver over all others is silly.

In short, don't blame the car, blame the driver of the car.  Send them back to driving school.  Pull their license.  If you don't approve of a class of vehicle, then argue your point on its proper merits.

I agree with you.  There are just as many 'evil' passenger car drivers out there as there are 'evil' SUV drivers.  There are individuals driving SUV's because they legitemately need them.

The reason I dislike SUV's so much is because they are hard to see around... particularly when at an intersection and a good portion of them are guzzlers.

OK, Kelefe, your explanation is taken and understood - thanks.

I do agree that Large SUVs, Crossovers and Trucks are all harder to see around. It is especially bad when you are parked by one in a parking lot and have to reverse out (edge out is better phrase) without being able to see any oncoming due to the bulk of the truck.

With oil hitting $70 a barrel this morning, I wonder when this will have a noticeable effect?
