Moving to Alberta
« on: August 26, 2005, 11:58:46 am »
I've just been offered a new job to start in Edmonton next month (exact date still being determined).

Obviously, there will be issues I need to deal with in getting our cars registered and insured in Alberta, and in getting Alberta Driver's Licences.

Any tips from someone who has recently moved to Alberta would be appreciated.  Even non-car related tips will be great.

Out of province vehicles have to have a special inspection performed.  Costs well under $100 for the inspection.  You can trade your DL for an Alberta version, probably have to pay a renewal or other fee.  Should be about $60 or so if memory serves.  Plates run about $70 per car per year.

You'll need insurance prior to any registration, and so you'll have to begin the taks of shopping.  Set a full day aside for that.
No place I'd rather be...

From Surrey to Edmonton just in time for winter?  Cool.  Or should I say...cold.

I'll have to roll out the welcome mat for you Weebl.  It's been nearly 17 years since I moved here from the "right" coast (), so I'm not too up on relocation tips.  But block heaters and snow tires would be a good idea if you don't already have them.

Thanks, DSW!  Already have the snow tires, and we are going to look into getting block heaters installed in the next couple of weeks.  Guess the snow tires are going on much earlier this year.

Yeah, wait 'till you get here: Save 6%..There's no PST.  Also you're gonna need to go to the garage here in Alberta anyway because you need an inspection.

Don't forget to get your driver's abstract for the insurance company in AB, that will speed up the process if you get it just before you move.

Looks like you could do a lot for worse for weather than Alberta - like everywhere else in Canada.

You may also want to check out the cost of windshield replacement and decide whether it is better to have it covered under your insurance.

They use rocks in the winter for traction.

Weebl, moving from BC to AB near the end of the year is good for the tax refund as well.
You will be deemed to have been in AB all of 2005 and get a refund of the difference between BC prov tax and AB prov tax.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Welcome to Deadmonton.
Starter, block heater, winter tires. for sure.

It is cold, but it is dry windy cold. so all you need is a big ass jacket. I wear a T-shirt + ski jacket in Winter @ -30C

you are now Warn about the following:

high insurance rate

Unlike Vancouver or other big cities, which most drivers are aggressive but smart. Edmonton is full of idoitic driver. They don't know what they are doing. not that aggressive. but it is more dangerous because you can't predict what they would do next.

when snow or rain, there must be accident.

Avoid travel through whitemud/yellowhead trail/97 street to work.

you can do whatever you want and someone will yeild to you if you signal. I can say they are more friendly then the big cities. (not me though)

if BC = asian, AB = brown people.

the grocery is expensive then BC.

the house is way cheaper then BC.

Weebl - congrats on the move to AB (although I greatly prefer Calgary, can you get your boss to reroute you?? ).

I just returned from 5 days in the Calgary area, and I noticed how things are just BOOMING over there today (and I was raised in AB and lived there all my life until 1978). It truly is the place to be job and career wise today and for the next 50 years (unless those Eastern B**tard Politiicians try to steal Alberta's wealth again).

Good luck. And, yes, do get glass insurance for sure.......... You will find the climate harder on your vehicle than at the Coast.
