Help!! I need new all season tires
« on: August 25, 2005, 01:09:02 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm looking for a decent set of all season tires that aren't too expensive. They are going on my  Integra beater car. I wanted to know which of these brands are good in terms of traction in the rain and grip on the road.

Falkens ZE512 $345 cdn. total for all 4's
Deans LS1 $365 cdn. total for all 4's
Geostar $70/tire...........never heard of them
Yokahama Avid T4 $106/tire
Pirelli P3000 $96/tire
Toyo Spectrum $112/tire.

Thanks :-)
IntegraGirl..............my fake Husband on the left.  LOL

There are Toyo Spectrum tires on my Focus.  They are at 7/32" tread depth.  They ride smoothly, and provide reasonable grip.  However, they are somewhat noisy.  I'm assuming this may be related to the tread depth.  I've had the car since March, so unfortunately I cannot comment when the tires were new.

What size are you looking at?  Depending on the size, the Falken's could be worth looking into (low profile sizes have shorter warranty).
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

Perfect!  60 and higher profiles get the longer 60,000 mile (100,000 km) warranty.  The warranty is cut in half for 55 or lower profile.

In your case, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Falken ZE 512.  Probably the best bang for your dollar there.

Great. Thanks Weebl. :-) As long as they have good traction in the rain and somewhat comfortable, then I'll be happy. I currently have crappy Hercules on mine and they really are crappy!

Have the 512s on Wife's car, 50 series tho. Very good tire for the money. Would buy them again.

On my Dad's new-to-him I35, the tires are also the Falkin 512s. When I test drove the car, the tires handle the road very well.

Thanks Initial_d for your review.  It's always nice to hear from others that have the tires and know the feel of them.

Thanks again. :-)

I too have the 512s on my car.  I have run them through a fall, a spring and a summer now.  No complaints.  They're reasonable quiet, handle both wet and dry conditions well and are waaay better than the OEM Goodyears.  Great value, IMO.

Great, thanks!  Well so far I'm leaning towards the Falken's or Toyo's.

Medication is the ONLY thing you should feed Saffi.  Compliments only encourage him.

Hmm, maybe he can give me the good stuff too.  ;D

Ok, big question.  I often hear misleading information on the speed ratings of tires.  I read a recent article in The Star about this topic.  My car requires a H-rated tire. But when I called around for tires, they told me T rated is fine and I'll never do 220kms/hr. anyways. Well the article touched base on that.  They said it's not a matter of the speed that you're going because really, who's going to be driving 220kms/hr.??  The auto manufacturer does the math and comes up with the ratings.  They said it's more about the tire construction than speed.  The higher the speed rating, generally the stiffer the tire is, and the better it is at dissipating heat.  Stiffer tires improve steering and braking response.  They said by moving down in speed rating you degrade the cars capabilities.  It also can affect the suspension as well.   Any thoughts on this?  ???

What you read about going to a lower speed rating degrading performance is true.  It is more the tire construction than the actual speed capabilities of the tire when you look at the rating.

That said, with all the choices in the market place, a higher speed rating does not necessarily mean a much more expensive tire.

Thanks weebl.  I wasn't going to go with a higher speed rating.  I just want to stick with the manufacturers requirements and that is H-rated tires.  But I often get tire guys that try to sell me T-rated tires which I have right now and they are horrible overall.  So, when I try to explain what this article said, they think it's hocus pocus and are so stuck are trying to prove that going down a speed rating would not matter.
So, I'll just stay away from those guys that tell me otherwise.
