NRCanada has a Audi A2 1.2L TDI (gets 105+mpg) and I asked if they carried their own diesel and she goes "no... we just fill it up at the station" and I'm thinkin' that engine requires special imported diesel, lady!

John,

The Accord and Lexus are not about economy, they are about power (and are marketed as such).  Electric motors add a boatload of torque with no lag (just like the electric turbo on EBay ).  These are their "top" models and price as such as well.  More and more people are looking at hybrids as performance enhancers, not just for fuel efficiency.  Autoblog recently had a piece http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000053055762/ about Mitsu testing an EVO with in-wheel electric motors.

Interesting piece at www.wired.com today about how explosive Li Ion bats are and a new tech to make them safe for cars.

"The diesel also produced ten times as many NOx emissions."

Seems nobody took notice of that sentence. Would that pass regs in North America and Europe?

SirAqua. That A2 will undoubtedly run on pump diesel here... preferably the somewhat cleaner Sunoco and I think Shell has a 'premium" diesel at some stations.  BUT I sus[ect that it will not meet its emission specs, power output OR distance between services on our diesel.
I se Joie's note on the piezo electric injectors and I do believe that but I think the A2 is 1/2 a generation behind those as NRC/Transport Canada have had an A2 for a few years now..( not sure tho')
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

A2 3L TDi has simpler injection, something like current TDi's available in US/Canada.

Diesel emissions are getting minimized very fast so I guess they'll be able to overcome the tightest emission standards comming in next years.

Regards,
Martin

Minou,

That's one of the current issues with diesel (and is within current regs).  Target is 2010 for NOx reductions in diesels (particularly trucks).  To do it you need the low sulfur diesel slated for 2006 (and currently available in Europe) and then a catalytic converter designed for diesel and NOx emissions.  That said, no one has talked about the particulate emissions ...

Anyone knows how much NOx emissions the gasoline RX330 or ML320 produce compared to the RX400h?

I saw a weird article about injecting Urea into diesel exhaust to clean it up... the EPA of all epole are considering how to ensure that owners keep the urea tank/container filled  and working.

Seriously!  I think it was in the Globe and Mail

Over to you Saf

Tpl,

Two mechanisms are being discussed for how a diesel cat will work to reduce NOx emissions - the more difficult, but current leading method, does involve urea and the truck carrying a tank of it to be used over time.  You would actually have to refill the urea occasionally.  Ugghh (or is that "Ahhhhhh .....")

Saying that a diesel beat a hybrid in a cross country driving test is like saying an SUV beat a Civic in a cargo carrying test.

It's fairly self evident, and extremely pointless.

David I am aware that the article was serious... I was hoping for a Saf special.

Urea CON2H4   I wonder what the chemistry is to reduce NOx   anyway...If I can have a diesel bmw with good perfomance I'll fill the tank whenever the idiot light goes on.
