"But it strikes me, if Fram filters are so terrible, why are they so widely used?"

It's called advertising! "Pay me now or pay me later" was a big slogan. A lot of people who knew almost nothing about cars "knew" about Fram, and since they knew the name (brand recognition) that's what they assumed was the best.

Ahhh, poor naive grasshopper. You'd make a marketer very happy with that comment.

If you can't accept someone else's analysis, go and buy a Fram filter and virtually any other kind, cut them apart and look at the construction and components. You may find the results more compelling.

Fram makes more then one grade of filter. Even the private label Filters are made to the Buyers specs by them. Quite often I will use one for a Diesel engine as I have cross referenced them over and the Diesel filters have a lot more filtering media in them then the Gas Filters. I have done this many times with a Gas engine that accepts the Diesel Filter. My GM Small Block engine is a example of this. I have used the GM Diesel engine filter on it and have had no problems at all. The GM filters are rated as one of the very best out there. I don't buy too many other brands at all.

Chris at Eunos has found a supplier who gets him the Japanese filters that are used by Mazda USA (not FRAM).  He buys them from a place on Willingdon between Hwy 1 and Lougheed (don't know the name).
