Toronto Police out in force tonight?
« on: August 23, 2005, 10:53:34 pm »
Just went out for about an hour - driving from North York to East your to run some errands.

Given that ordinarily the police in Toronto seem to be non-existant, there seemed to be a lot of police cruiser roaming around tonight.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see them out there enforcing The Law (though I made sure I fixed the cruise control to stick rigourously to the limits), but any one know if something special went on?

A  TO police officer was at BMW driver training on Tuesday.... so maybe they were all out practicing their hand positions on the steering wheel?

With the rash of gun violence in the city (among other problems), maybe 'the fuzz' are trying to bolster their presence?

A TO police officer was struck last night by a green Neon (IIRC).  Police looking for 2 suspects.  Could be related.

What's going on in TO!!!

"What's going on in TO!!!"

I think that Toronto has reached that limit where now it is too big, too many people.  It's like critical mass - too much concentrated into too small an area.  I think you'll see major social problems escalating in the Toronto area because of this.  More crime, more violent crime.

Isn't that what's cool about it though? No time to sleep, always something going on somewhere in and around TO.

The downtown is the safe part!

All those condos down there are great for the core.

It's the more affordable scirts like North York, Sarsborough, etc that are getting more and more violent it seems. Sure, stuff happens DT b/c that's where people go and that's the happening spot, but I think the urban development has been very positive for the city.

Expert driving is going through the Jane-Finch corridor of TO without your car being hit by errand bullets.

I have now lived in Port Alberni just over a year, and until today, I've seen 4 cars stopped by police. Until this morning that is. On my way out of town to play a round of golf on the east coast (of the Island) I saw 3 separate occasions of "gumball madness". I drove very quietly out of town, thinking of this thread all the way.

Speaking of driving (this is for you Crolly), I did manage a hole-in-one on the 111 yard 4th hole. It was my third, lifetime - first in 32 years, but I never really counted the other two as they were both on the same 55 yard hole on a pitch & putt coarse in Vancouver. I even got a certificate, but on the downside, we were playing as two threesomes, so I had to buy drinks for 5 guys. Well worth it though! Oh yes, all three aces were on 4th holes. <spooky>

It does seem sometimes that TO is developing an new underclass. I think that there is only one solution, a rapidly growing economy with (good)jobs for all... and that means there have to be good jobs for unskilled workers, new immigrants, etc.  not just another 1000 programming jobs.  I think this means that the escalation of "qualifications" has to stop. That is, requiring a degree where High school will do, requiring high school where  a good attitude and a strong back will do etcetera and of course the dreaded "Canadian Experience" that is used an an excuse for all kinds of things.

This is not to say that removing some of the money from drug dealing wouldn't help as well to lower the gap between legal and illegal employment but see Freakonomics for that one.

I believe the problem in the last 20 years is that the spoiled youth want everything now and with no effort. A high school education is worthless and prepares you for jobs which pay under $20/hr. If you do not have any postsecondary education these days you will face a tough up hill battle.

Unionized jobs are on the decline due to globalization and I think this will be the last generation for in low skill high paying jobs. North American companies can’t compete with the rest of the world with the high payroll burdens.

The gap is widening and the only fast track to wealth for many is crime.

Snow you are correct and that is why the problem is so intractable.    And it sure is not helped by low educational standards in grade school and high school so that bthe high scholl diploma is deemed worthless.  I would consider trying for more apprenticeships.... they don t pay much but it gives people whose skill is in their hands a place to stand.

Avtoller, hole-in-one eh?  How cool is that!  It will be ages before I get a shot like that.

Shouldn't they give you a new car instead, like a fully loaded EH?

If they did, I would have to turn pro, and that would spoil all the fun.
