How to change the oil pan gasket?
« on: August 23, 2005, 03:56:52 pm »
I tried to replace the 91 honda civic engine oil pan gasket to fix the oil leakage. In order to remove the oil pan, I have to remove part of the exhaust pipe, but I have difficulty to loose the nuts. I think the pipe is always too hot so that the nuts are stucked. Also those nuts and screws to hold the oil pan are far to be reached. What kind of tools should be used? I have some simple tools like wrench set, plier, and screw driver. Try to save some money by diy but even can't loose a nut at the first step.

If you don't have the right tools and experience, it's best not to attempt such work to save a few bucks.

You would need a Hand Rachet and extension with the correct size of sicket on the end to loosen the Pan Bolts. Can the pan be removed with out dropping any of the steering components? The exhaust will be very hard to get off without a airgun probably but be very careful you don't break any of the exhaust studs. Is this a one piece gasket or 2 on this pan as well?  This can be a difficult job if you don't have the right tools or experience. Weebl is correct in that it can be a real pain in the butt.

You'll probably need an air tool as Barrie mentioned to loosen it.  Or maybe an electric impact gun.

I have none of the tools you mentioned and don't have an easy way to get them. It seems that I have to have someone to do the job. Thank you guys for your advices. How much will it cost to be done in shop? Canadian Tire quoted me Min. $250+tax including oil pan, gasket and labor. I may change the oil pan as well since the oil drain thread is stripped.

They should be able to fix the stripped thread easy enough in the pan with a slightly different type going back in. I would also take some quotes from a Private garage who you or your family or friends deal with as Crappy Tire is not known for High quality work at all. Their prices are a little high as well.

Absolutely.  You should be able to cut that $250. in half.  Private Honda shop of course will be the best.  Check out buying a used pan here providing you really need one or leave that to the garage to repair like Barrie mentioned.

You might find the pan just needs tightening together with a drain plug washer.
