How to handle used car inspections
« on: August 23, 2005, 03:10:13 pm »
I am about to sell my car and was wondering how most people handle a potential buyers request to have the car inspected by a mechanic.  I have no problems with them having it checked but should I ask for some deposit or a copy of their drivers license?  What about insurance implications if they drive it to and from their garage?

It's your car, so it's your insurance that covers it when you lend it to someone.  You'd better make sure they have a valid license.

And, if you let them go off with your car, you'd better make sure you know where they're going, and who they are.

Or, you could go with them, letting them drive.

It's covered under your insurance, but what if they smash it up on the way to the garage?  I'd be more comfortable dropping off a car at whatever garage they want, then picking it up.  A bit P.I.T.A. I know, but how much is your smashed up car worth because Joe buyer is a poor driver?

My friend is still paying higher insurance because he let his roommate borrow his car and she got into an accident.

If your in Ontario the insurance implications are huge.  You will need to drive it to wherever yourself.
