Depends...on age, sex, driving record, driving habits, and whether or not you're really a duck.

I feel when choosing an insurance company, rate isn't the only consideration.  Do you prefer personal service, or you prefer to deal with a call center?  Last time I switched car, I called my insurance agent, she asked me the basic info, and I got the temporary insurance slip by fax 5 minutes later.  I was very happy about the service.

Just come to BC, where you only have one option!  :-(

I hate ICBC.

Hate's a pretty strong word.  Have you ever experienced the private insurance companies in non-regulated provinces?

No, and fair point.  Hate probably is a strong word - but ICBC charging me an arm and a leg and then posting profits of $360 million (iirc) ticked me off.  That, and with a monopoly on the industry they're not obliged to offer the same sort of customer service businesses that have to compete with one another do.

Trust me, the ICBC rates are significantly lower than the ones you'll see in Alberta, Ontairo etc.  Insurance is a multi-billion dollar industry and most insurance companies operating in a 'free' market can and will post a much higher profit margin with more competition.

No question that you are paying less in BC, Demo. If you were in a private insurance province, you'd probably pay 2 to 3 times more. My 22 year old son is only paying about $1500 year for the '94 Protege.

Be thankful for what you have with ICBC. They are not perfect and have made some questionable investments (IMO) but the insurance rates are very good (especially for higher at-risk driver age groups).

The rates are great for "good" drivers - i.e. once you get your 45/50% discount.  But $2000 a year is a lot of money when you're in high school.

And it irks me that my parents pay half of what I do for a car worth about 10 times as much as mine.

But it's all we've got, I guess.

Believe me there are provinces where insurance for you would be in the $5,000 year range - quit your complaining, you have it good.

Shucks, just having a car in high school is a privledge IMO.

You beat me to it Ovr.  Demo, you aren't listening.  The insurance you pay is cheap compared to other provinces.  C - H - E - A - P.

Once you understand how the insurance song and dance works, you'll understand why your parents are paying less for more coverage.

When in high school, I never had a nice car.  I had to work and save my ass off until my grade 12 year when I could afford my 1982 Honda Accord.  Paid $750 for it.  Insured it with basic PLPD coverage for $3200.  Still think ICBC sucks?  Think about it.

If you are a university graduate, check with your university.  Some insurance companies have deals for alumni and offer special, discounted rates.

When my boy starts driving in Feb. 06 he's going to pay $4200 for a clunker with no collision.  Sorry Demo no sympathy here!

Mollie makes a good point--lots of universities, colleges and professional organisations have affinity insurance programs. I wasn't unhappy with my previous insurance rates but I saved a sizeable chunk when I switched to my university's alumni program.

Mollite, Bmorton....Demo is in high school so unless he's Doogie Howser...he's not going to have his University degree. :-)  I have the same discount and it helps...

MDX, I would think you'd get a better deal through whoever offers the plan for OMA members!

I do get quite a discount on my insurance plans.  I go through one single company for most of my insurance needs and I find their rates acceptable.  Now that Alberta residents are getting insurance rollbacks for the vehicle policy, the rates may be more reasonable for most.  Mine didn't drop much...but every little penny helps.
