Another consideration.

Is this your first modern Nissan? Does the noise seem to come from the rear?

Nissan are well known to have noisy fuel pumps, although reliable.

When driving the noise is subdued by all other noises. When in neutral, demand on the engine is low and the fuel pump is reasonably quiet, but when stopped but engaged, the pump provides more pressure and bcomes loud.

Just one possibility.

Sorry but I tried 2 X-Trail in Mtl. area and this is exactly what I felt...

Being stopped on a red light, the vehicle is shaking, like if the engine was running too slow... i understand not being agree with you for my 1st reply is maybe not a good idea.

Dedemo Welcome to the Forum. Say what you think as it does matter as we are all the same here and can't always agree with everything on a full time basis.

Thanks Barrie, as I said I am actually in the process to buy a small ute, lately tried the CRV, X-Trail, Tucson/Sportage, and wait for 2006 Rav 4 which is supossed to beef up a little bit on cargo dimension.

My choice so far is the X-Trail but still concerned about this shaking on red light when the engine is "idleling" ... like also the CRV but guessed quite expensive having more on the X-Trail for the bucks.

Thanks for your welcome. Currently member of Forum 1-2-3, I read your comments since more than 2 yrs, you guys are very interesting.

Like our forum, it looks you have some warm discussions but usually  done with respect and quite objective.

PS.Also having fun reading Jimmy doing lot of advertizing for Hyundai with the Sonata.

Atm,
After reading and responding to your initial post and reading much of this thread, I was curious. So the next time I was out in my X-trail, I shut down the AC, fan and stereo and let it idle in Drive (about 750 RPM according to the tach).  My observations: No vibration at all through the seat, floor, firewall, shifter or console. None in the steering wheel if you grip it normally, but there is a hint of vibration if you let go of the wheel and just contact it lightly with your fingertips. As for noise, it's about as quiet at idle as the best of the 20+ vehicles I've owned.  The only unusual noise is a very soft murmur which I believe is the power-steering pump. Maybe that's what you've been trying to describe??

Sparky, thank you for taking time to check out this question on your xTrail!  I think you are right, the term should be murmur (not hum nor muffled).  Neither was it the sound cause by turning on the AC - thats normal.  For me, it was not a vibration nor any movement.  Just a murmur cabin sound at a Stop D gear position.

I did try 3 different xTrails - one in Feb 2005 and 2 in the past month to confirm the sound.  Note that this is a very faint/low frequency sound - not something very obviously loud.  Initially, I thought is was due to the -20 degrees temperature.  But was disappointed to hear the sound during my test drive in the Summer.  The Nissan sales person did agree to the murmur sound after I focused his attention to the sound.  In addition, I also tried the CRV to see if this sound exist in the similar stopped D Gear positon - it did not.

I was close to deciding on an xTrail.  I think its one of the best value in the league. I like the features, large sunroof, deep backseat legroom, 4 cyl with adequate power, etc.  If the sound was not a concern - the xTrail would be my pick.

By the way, this is a sound concern that affects the EARS.  It is not a vibration concern that affects the BUTT :-)

Back from my drive.  Our X-Trail, with engine running, interior fan off, radio off, vehicle stopped, and in drive, exhibits slightly more noise than when it is in park or neutral.  No vibration beyond normal engine vibration.  Did the same test in the mother-in-law's Rav4, and found the same thing.

How this becomes a deal breaker is beyond me.

ATM, trust your feeling. If you hear the humming at 3 different cars, then don't get this car.

ATM. Based on your latest description, I still say you hear the fuel pump! Anoying, but no problems with that.

I hear humming in every car I'm in - it's called Tinnitus.

All ex-rock musicians and jackhammer operators get it...
2011 BMW X3 35i Vermillion Red, MSport
and
2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 in Alpine White
