XTrail: Humming Cabin Noise on idle Drive gear position
« on: August 21, 2005, 11:21:09 pm »
I am very interested in getting the Nissan xTrail.  However, I notice that there is a Humming Cabin Noise when the car is in in the "D" gear position with the brakes pressed and with all windows closed.

I test drove the xTrail from 3 different dealers to see that this humming cabin noise is not specific to one car.  However all 3 vehicles had the humming cabin noise when the gear is shifted to D and with the brake pedal pressed.

Have you, existing xTrail owners, experienced this humming cabin noise?  I wonder if this noise only exists on New xTrails and disappears once the car is broken in (ie. pass 1000 km??)

Take you for your feedback!

If you could HUM a few BARS...you'd have enuf money ta get it fixed.....quite whingeing.....!!!...take yer I-POD out......

Could be a frequency generated when holding the car against its wishes to go forward when in D gear....seems unlikely as that what all autos do at the stop light etc...first any of us heard of this.....Tinnitus perhaps......?????

Thanks for your comments :-)

It sounds like a muffled low frequency sound.  I did highlight the muffled cabin noise to two separate sales person and they concurred to the sound. Their suggestion is to consider the Murano or Pathfinder as the bigger engine would be quieter.

Again, I notice the muffled cabin sound when stopped on the D gear position with cabin doors/windows closed and no A/C -- and no radio (or ipod :-) ) turned on.

The low muffled sound is what's known as an "engine".  Its sound is muffled by a "muffler".

Items that are shared by the Murano, Pathfinder, and just about every other vehicle you'll find on just about every other car lot.

Seriously, either you got a bad one, or you're insane.

I know what he's TALKING about - that vibration when you put it in 'D' with your brake on and the car kinda shakes slightly and makes a noise. Like you're holding it back and it's ready to go, and it's in the depth of cold Winter. Drove a Hyundai that did that once. I guess X-Trails aren't known to do it from the info above.

I've never driven an XTrail, but have tested the CRV and RAV4 cute utes, so my speculation could be perhaps this hum is the buzziness that a lot of 4 bangers have?  When cold, the RAV has a bit of that moreso than the CRV...but both exhibit this buzziness to a degree.  When it warms up, it's a lot smoother.

No need to call somebody insane Cp, if you read the post, Atm drove 3 DIFFERENT X-Trails to see if he/she got a lemon the first time.

In my defense, I raised insanity as only one of the possibilities.

Really, our's doesn't do that.  Neither did the one we test-drove.  Yes, I can hear a four-cylinder engine, but I don't feel like I'm sitting on top of it.  For the class of vehicle, it's very smooth.

Some people are more sensitive to some things than others.  It may bother some, it may be a non-issue for others.

I do like the salesperson's little remark about moving up into a more expensive model.  Nice.

The X-Trail does not shake or vibrate anymore than others, that's all silly IMO.  What you feel at idle , 700 or so RPM is pretty much the way a 4 feels like.

Smain, are you saying that Atm made it all up and that the THREE X-Trails he tried don't shake/vibrate anymore than his previous vehicle? He sounded sincere in his question, and if he brought up the point, it is because he felt a difference from his current/previous vehicle, no?

Some people, including myself, are more sensitive to things like that... just because you can't perceive it or notice it doesn't mean that the X-Trail doesn't shake/vibrate more than other vehicles...

Whatever.

I would consider myself extremely sensitive to stuff like that and would not tolerate if my X-Trail had such a vibration trust me.  Furthermore I get to drive all kinds of cars weekly, so I'm in a good position to compare and comment.  I will tell you that nearly all of our NA cars with a V6 have a slight miss at idle, that would drive me nuts.  Getting back to this poster's test drive I'm not quite sure if he's using the right term to describe the issue, there's quite a difference between a hum and a vibration don't you think?  Like CP and Sparky said no such problem here.  One thing that will really make a difference on any car is turning the AC on.
