Car wash after chemical oil spray
« on: August 20, 2005, 04:15:52 pm »
Hey guys!

Yes, I'm back!!!  I just got my car rust proofed after the paint work.  I wanted to know how many car washes does it require to get rid of all the chemical oil spray that's on my car. It's gone through 2 washes so far.  Most of it is off.  But I can still feel some of it on parts of the car.
Also, are the soft cloth washes best for getting all this gunk out?  I heard the touchless is useless.  I would wash the car myself, but I have back problems.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
IntegraGirl..............my fake Husband on the left.  LOL

I was going to suggest washing yourself but since your back is funky that's not going to work.  I actually only take mine to a touchless when I don't have time to wash it myself.  ESSO usually has decent touchless.  I find soft cloths leave a lot of fine scratches on the paintwork/ clear coat.  You should try taking it through a touchless and see if it gets it off.  If not.... stick to the ones you know.

The owner of the bodyshop told me the touchless car washes do not clean your car that well.  He said the soft cloths cleans it much better, but only leave minimal scratches on my paint that won't be noticable. I was on the fench on this one as I spent alot of money on the paint job and don't want the car wash to ruin it. I'll probably try the touchless one as you suggested and hopefully the stuff will come off.  And if not, then I don't think I have a choice but to go with the soft cloth ones.  He said as long as they don't use brushes, I am fine.
Thanks for your advice. :-)

The only automatic car wash I take my car through is the touchless ones. The brushes on other machine can damage your car and I would never go near them. Esso machines are pretty good. They get your car quite clean but will not remove sticky grime. These washes are good but from time to time your car will have to be hand washed,

To get the spray off your car you will have to bring your car to a hand wash place that does the "whole" job manually. It is the only way to get grime off completely.

I make a point of get my car hand washed and vacumed every 6 weeks or so in winter. Helps get salt off car and keeps the carpets in pretty good shape. Helps keep inside of windows clear as well.

I have a place in Montreal that gives discount on buying 10 washes. I get it for less than $10 a wash.

If you can't wash your own car I guess you cannot wax it either. I would watch for specials and get you car waxed by a hand wash place at least one a year.
Living my BMW dream.

Hi Slybry,

The are other gas stations that offer the "soft cloth" wash. So, they do not use brushes.  Just a long strip of cloth that does make contact to your car.  I know a few people I've spoken to personally say that method is the only way to get a "clean" wash, well other than handwashing it yourself.
But I will go for the touchless first. If that doesn't work, then I will try and find a place that will do the exterior wash and wax for me.  I might get the interior done as well.  I had the both done last year.  The interior is still very clean, but the vents are dirty from all the dust when I had my car painted.

Susan I suggest you let your fingers do the walking and find a Detailing shop who does a lot of work for dealers. They will be able to do the interior and the outside of the vehicle in a very professional manner. About half a day should be enough for them to do a good job for you. They usually have packages that you can choose from and different prices. They will have one to suit you.

Yeah that's what I was thinking of.  Do you or anyone else know of a good Detailing shop in Scarborough or Markham? I've looked around, but they sound like some fly by night places. I saw a good one in a commercial but I can't remember what they were called. I'm having a senior moment in my 30's.

Sorry I can't help you there as I don't live near you at all. Maybe call a few dealerships and ask them who they use.

ah, Scarborough...  are you within reasonable distance from Eglinton and Pharmacy?  There's a Petro Canada station there at the northeast corner with a different kind of touch-wash. They use some kind of rubbery-blue material that is paint-friendly.  My first encounter with a soft cloth car wash wasn't good... lots of scratches.  I believe some foreign debris got stuck on the soft cloth from previous washes.

Drive by and check it out if you'll like it. My experience so far has great.  I've been using that facility for almost 3 years now.

Hmm, well I'm more in North Scarborough. Thanks for letting me know.  Maybe if I'm ever in that area, I'll give it a try.  I'm glad you didn't get any scratches from this car wash place.

I have a question in regards to the type of cloth that should be used when washing a car by hand. Not that I'm going to wash my car, but I have friends that are willing to help me out because of my back problem. I wanted to know is it recommended to use a lambswool mit for the soap part and use a shammy to dry the car?  On the site www.finedetails.org, they said they use 100% cotton terry cloth and said shammies can hold dirt and scratch your car.  Is this true?

The Lambswool Mitts are very good as long as there is NO grit or dirt left on them. I use a large sponge most of the time as it seems the Gritty stuff rinses off when I rinse it out in the pail between dipping it for another sector of the car. A Shammie is very good for drying a vehicle but I have found a Cloth type of Material which is called "The Absorber". They come in many colours and are around $20.00 at Crappy Tire. These do a remarkable job of wiping down the vehicle and even yourself fresh out of the shower. Very easy to maintain and seem to last almost forever. They come in a sealed plastic storage container and are worth their weight in Gold for this purpose. They are the best I have ever seen for drying your car.

Hmmm, a cloth type of material that wipes down a car real good and also your body after a shower.  hmmm  So a Shammie will not scratch the paint right?  Because I already bought one. If so, then I will check out "The Absorber".  I'm running out of towels after showering anyways.  hehe

I would not go through auto washes with cloths. The grit from every other car might be on the cloths and there is possibility of damage to paint. I either go touchless or hand wash. That is it.

For washing I have been told that wash mitt better than sponge. I prefer to use mitt myself. The key to not scratching is to rinse it out in bucket often. If you do not you are grinding the dirt picked up off car into paint.

Drying with shammie will not scratch car unless there is still some grit on car from not washing properly.

You say haven't cleaned interior in a year and it is still pretty clean. You must vacum off everything and everyone that goes in it. Maybe you keep your car in saran wrap. I vacum and clean windows and dash etc every 2 months or so. My car would look like crap if I waited a year.

Hey Slybry,

Thank you very much for your advice. I just wanted to comfirm that shammies do not scratch the paint. I guess that website that uses 100% cotton terry cloth to wash their cars and says shammies will scratch the paint is wrong??

I use 100% terry cloths to dry the vehicle.  I use a nice wash mitt to wash the car.  Two buckets of water.  One with soap...and another bucket with water to rinse the mitt off before I dip it in the suds.  Wax with microfibre (to take off) and 100% cotton towels (to put on).
